NOHILI SERIES

The Nohili series consists of poorly drained soils that formed in alluvium underlain by marly lagoon deposits and marine clays. Nohili soils are on coastal plains and have slopes of 0 to 2 percent. The mean annual rainfall is about 23 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 75 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Very-fine, smectitic, calcareous, isohyperthermic Cumulic Endoaquolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Nohili clay - sugarcane. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted. All textures are "apparent field textures.")

Ap1--0 to 5 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) clay, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) dry; strong fine and very fine subangular blocky structure; extremely hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; moderate effervescence with hydrogen peroxide; moderate effervescence with hydrochloric acid; mildly alkaline (pH 7.4); abrupt smooth boundary. (4 to 6 inches thick)

Ap2--5 to 18 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) clay, brown (7.5YR 4/2) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; extremely hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; common medium and fine roots; common medium and fine pores; moderate effervescence with hydrogen peroxide; slight effervescence with hydrochloric acid; mildly alkaline (pH 7.7); abrupt wavy boundary. (11 to 15 inches thick)

B21--18 to 23 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) clay, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) dry; mottled reddish brown (5YR 4/4) and dark gray (10YR 4/1); moderate fine, medium and coarse angular blocky structure; extremely hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; common medium roots, few fine and very fine roots; common medium pores, few fine pores; moderate effervescence with hydrogen peroxide; slight effervescence with hydrochloric acid; few soft black concretions; mildly alkaline (pH 7.8); abrupt smooth boundary. (4 to 6 inches thick)

B22--23 to 29 inches; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) clay, coarse light gray (10YR 6/1) mottles, fine dark reddish brown (2.5YR 3/4), very dark gray (10YR 3/1) mottles dry; moderate coarse angular blocky structure extremely hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; many fine roots; many fine pores, common very fine pores; slight effervescence with hydrochloric acid; few pressure faces and slickensides; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); gradual smooth boundary. (5 to 7 inches thick)

B3--29 to 33 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) clay; mottled yellowish brown (10YR 5/4), dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4), black (10YR 2/1), and gray (10YR 5/1) dry; moderate medium and coarse angular blocky structure; extremely hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; common medium and fine roots; common medium and fine pores; slight effervescence with hydrogen peroxide; violent effervescence with hydrochloric acid; moderately alkaline (pH 7.9); gradual smooth boundary. (4 to 6 inches thick)

IICcam--33 to 43 inches; light brownish gray (2.5YR 6/2) cemented layers and lenses of clay; mottled brown (7.5YR 5/4), yellowish brown (10YR 5/4), dary gray (10YR 4/1), and light gray (N 7/0) dry; laminated; clay is extremely hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; few medium and fine roots; few medium, fine and very fine pores; slight effervescence with hydrogen peroxide; violent effervescence with hydrochloric acid; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); abrupt smooth boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick)

IIIC2--43 to 120 inches; dark gray (N 4/0) clay; some coatings of olive brown (2.5Y 4/4), very dark gray (5Y 3/1) dry; weak coarse angular blocky structure; extremely hard, firm very sticky and very plastic; many fine roots; many fine and very fine pores; very slight:effervescence with hydrogen peroxide; under 10 power lens yellow and white specks are visible; on drying many fine white long crystals form on outside of clods; very strongly acid (pH 5.0).

TYPE LOCATION: Kauai County, Hawaii; Kekaha Quadrangle - 21 degrees 59' 36.8" north latitude and 159 degrees 44' 28.8" west longitude.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to the IICcam horizon is 20 to 40 inches. Mean annual soil temperature is 75 degrees F. The A horizon has chroma of 2 or 3. The B2 horizon has hue of 5YR through 10YR, value of 2 or 3 and chroma of 1 through 3. It has few to many mottles.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Kaloko series. Kaloko soils have a mollic epipedon less than 20 inches thick.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Nohili soils are on coastal plains at elevations near sea level. Slopes are less than 2 percent. The soils formed in alluvium washed from soils formed from basic igneous rocks underlain by marly lagoon deposits and marine clays. Mean annual rainfall is 20 to 40 inches. Average January temperature is 71 degrees F., average July temperature 78 degrees F., and mean annual temperature is about 75 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Kekaha, Lualualei, and Mamala soils and the competing Kaloko soils. Kekaha soils have reddish brown colors throughout the sola and lack mottles. Lualualei soils have hue of 10YR in the A horizon and lack mottles. Mamala soils are underlain by cemented dune sand or coral limestone and lack mottles.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained; slow runoff; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: All areas are used for growing sugarcane.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Coastal plains on west and east sides of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The extent is about 1,150 acres.
