Slope ranges from 5 to 50 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 25 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 44 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, isotic, frigid Vitrandic Haploxeralfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Outland gravelly sandy loam, forested, on a 8 percent W facing slope under mixed conifers and shrubs at 5400 feet elevation. (When described, September 13, 1985, the soil was moist from 0 to 7 inches and dry below. Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

Oi--3 inches to 0; litter of fresh and decomposed needles, twigs and cones; abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 4 inches thick)

A--0 to 4 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/3) gravelly sandy loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) moist; moderate medium granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine, common fine and few medium roots; few very fine interstitial and tubular pores; 15 percent 5 to 75 mm hard, rounded pebbles and 10 percent 2 to 5 mm hard, rounded pebbles; slightly acid (pH 6.5); clear wavy boundary. (3 to 8 inches thick)

BAt--4 to 10 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) very gravelly loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine, few fine, common medium and few coarse roots; few very fine interstitial and tubular pores; few thin clay films on peds; 15 percent hard, rounded cobbles, 15 percent 5 to 75 mm hard, rounded pebbles, and 20 percent 2 to 5 mm hard rounded pebbles; slightly acid (pH 6.1); clear wavy boundary. (5 to 9 inches thick)

Bt1--10 to 18 inches; light reddish brown (5YR 6/4) very gravelly loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; strong medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and plastic; few very fine and fine, and common medium roots; common very fine tubular pores; many moderately thick clay films on peds and in pores; 15 percent 5 to 75 mm hard rounded pebbles and 20 percent 2 to 5 mm hard rounded pebbles; slightly acid (pH 6.1); abrupt irregular boundry.

Bt2--18 to 36 inches; light reddish brown (5YR 6/4) extremely gravelly loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; strong fine and medium angular blocky structure; very hard, very friable, sticky and plastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots; common very fine tubular pores; many moderately thick clay films on peds and in pores, 55 percent 5 to 75 mm soft vesicular pebbles and 20 percent 2 to 5 mm pebbles; slightly acid (pH 6.1); abrupt irregular boundary. [The combined thickness of the Bt horizons is 12 to 26 inches]

Crt--36 inches; soft vesicular andesite; dug by spade; vesicles coated with thick clay films; fractured horizontally and vertically every 1 to 3 inches.

TYPE LOCATION: Lassen County, California; about 4.5 miles NW of Susanville; 2.5 miles N of Paiute Creek on the Paul Bunyan Logging Road then W on cross road 0.35 miles, then 50 feet S of road at edge of clearing; about 1500 feet E and 200 feet N of the SW corner of section 15, T.30 N., R.11 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum and depth to the paralithic contact ranges from 20 to 40 inches. The mean annual soil temperature varies from 44 to 46 degrees F. The soil moisture control section (10 inches to bedrock) is dry from July 15th to November 1st (107 days) and is moist in some or all parts the rest of the time. The soil temperture exceeds 41 degrees F. from May 1st to December 1st and exceeds 47 degrees F. from June 1st to November 1st. Rock fragments on the surface range from 0 to 50 percent stones, 0 to 15 percent cobbles and 20 to 45 percent gravel. Base saturation ranges from 50 to 75 percent.

The A horizon dry color is 10YR 5/3; 7.5YR 4/2, 4/4, 5/2, 5/4, or 5YR 5/3. Moist color is 10YR 3/2, 3/4, 7.5YR 3/2, 3/3; 5YR 3/2 or 3/3. Texture is gravelly sandy loam, very gravelly sandy loam, stony sandy loam, very stony sandy loam or very stony loam with 10 to 18 percent clay. Rock fragments range from 20 to 50 percent.

The BAt horizon is 10YR 6/3; 7.5YR 5/4 or 5YR 5/4. Moist color is 10YR 4/3; 7.5YR 3/4 or 5YR 3/4. Texture is gravelly sandy loam, very cobbly sandy loam or very gravelly loam with 10 to 18 percent clay. Rock fragments range from 20 to 50 percent.

The Bt horizon is 7.5YR 5/4, 6/2, 6/4, 6/6; 5YR 5/4 or 6/4. Moist color is 7.5YR 3/4, 4/4, 4/6; 5YR 3/4, or 4/4. Texture is very gravelly loam, extremely gravelly loam or extremely, cobbly loam with 20 to 27 percent clay. Soft weathered rock fragments range from 45 to 75 percent.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Agatha, Chapot(T), Euer, Inville, Jorge, Lorack, Rasser, Shaser(T) and Slacreek(T) series. The Agatha, Euer, Inville, Jorge and Lorack soils are greater than 40 inches deep. Chapot soils are dry less than 90 days.Rasser soils have very strongly acid sola and 27 to 35 percent clay in the argillic horizon. Shaser soils are dry 60 to 75 days and have 27 to 35 percent clay in the argillic horizon. Slacreek soils have a lithic contact at 20 to 40 inches depth and are dry 60 consecutive days.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Outland soils are on plateaus and mountain sideslopes. Slopes are 5 to 50 percent. These soils formed in material weathered from andesite or pyroclastic rock. Elevation is 4,900 to 6500 feet. The climate is subhumid mesothermal with warm dry summers and cold moist winters. The mean annual precipitation is about 20 to 30 inches with 40 to 70 inches of snow. The mean annual temperature is about 44 degrees F. The frost-free season is 60 to 80 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Penstock(T), Southpac(T), and Ulhalf(T) soils and the competing Inville soil. These soils are all deep or very deep to bedrock. In addition Southpac and Ulhalf soils are mesic.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; runoff is medium or rapid; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Outland soils are used for timber production. The vegetation is Jeffery pine, white fir, Incence-cedar, sugar pine, snowbrush, greenleaf manzanita and squawcarpet.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Lassen County near Susanville, CA. The soils of this series are moderately extensive.
