ROMONA SERIES

The Romona series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils that formed in as much as 46 cm (18 inches) of loess and in the underlying residuum from limestone. The Romona soils are on hills. Slope ranges from 35 to 60 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 1118 mm (44 inches), and mean annual air temperature is about 12 degrees C (54 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, superactive, mesic Typic Argiudolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Romona flaggy silt loam, on a 47 percent slope in a forest. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A1--0 to 2 cm (0 to 1 inch); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) flaggy silt loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) dry; moderate very fine subangular blocky structure; friable; many very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; 30 percent flagstones; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary.

A2--2 to 15 cm (1 to 6 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) flaggy silt loam; moderate very fine angular blocky structure; friable; many fine and medium roots; common very fine tubular pores; many distinct very dark gray (10YR 3/1) organic coatings on faces of peds and in pores; 30 percent flagstones; neutral; gradual wavy boundary. [Combined thickness of the A horizon is 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8 inches).]

Bt1--15 to 23 cm (6 to 9 inches); dark brown (10YR 3/3) silty clay loam; strong fine angular blocky structure; firm; common fine and medium roots; common very fine and fine vesicular and tubular pores; many distinct very dark gray (10YR 3/1) organo-clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 12 percent channers; neutral; gradual wavy boundary.

Bt2--23 to 48 cm (9 to 19 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) silty clay; strong medium angular blocky structure; firm; few fine and medium roots; few very fine and fine vesicular and tubular pores; many distinct very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) organo-clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 10 percent channers; neutral; gradual wavy boundary.

Bt3--48 to 69 cm (19 to 27 inches); dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) extremely flaggy silty clay; strong medium angular blocky structure; firm; few fine and medium roots; few very fine vesicular and tubular pores; common distinct dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) organo-clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 65 percent flagstones; neutral; abrupt irregular boundary. [Combined thickness of the Bt horizon is 41 to 81 cm (16 to 32 inches).]

R--69 cm (27 inches); indurated limestone; few solution channels filled with dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) silty clay.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Padonia and Wamego series. Padonia and Wamego have a paralithic contact within a depth of 102 cm (40 inches).

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Romona soils are on shoulders and backslopes of hills that are underlain with limestone. Slope ranges from 35 to 60 percent. The soils formed in as much as 46 cm (18 inches) of loess and in the underlying residuum from limestone. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 1067 to 1143 mm (42 to 45 inches). Mean annual air temperature ranges from 12 to 13 degrees C (53 to 56 degrees F).

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Caneyville, Corydon, Crider, and Haggatt soils. The Caneyville soils do not have dark colored surface layers. The shallow Corydon soils are on nearby landform positions. The very deep Crider soils are on summits and shoulders of hills. The deep Haggatt soils are on less sloping shoulders and backslopes.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained. The potential for surface runoff is high or very high. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderately high. Permeability is moderately slow.

USE AND VEGETATION: Nearly all areas are used for forest. Native vegetation is deciduous hardwood forest.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southern Indiana; MLRAs 114B and 122. The type location is in MLRA 114B. The series is of small extent.
