SHINN SERIES

The Shinn series consists of very shallow, well drained soils formed in residuum and colluvium from basalt. They are on mountains. Slopes are 3 to 65 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 16 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 47 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, mesic Lithic Ultic Argixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Shinn very gravelly loam - rangeland, on a 10 percent north slope at an elevation of 3,800 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated. All textures are apparent field textures and spot plate reaction is used for pH values.)

A--0 to 3 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) gravelly loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; moderate medium granular structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few fine interstitial pores; many fine and very fine roots; 30 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; slightly acid (pH 6.5); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)

Bt1--3 to 5 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/4) very gravelly loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) moist; moderate medium granular structure; slightly hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and very fine roots; few fine interstitial pores; 30 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; common distinct clay films on ped faces and many distinct continuous reddish brown (5YR 4/4) and dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) clay films on rock fragments; neutral (pH 6.8); gradual wavy boundary. (1 to 5 inches thick)

Bt2--5 to 9 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/3) extremely gravelly clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common fine and medium interstitial pores; 50 percent pebbles and 10 percent cobbles; common distinct clay films on ped faces and common distinct continuous yellowish red (5YR 4/6) and dark brown (7.5YR) clay films on rock fragments; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (1 to 4 inches thick)

R--9 inches; basalt

TYPE LOCATION: Douglas County, Washington; approximately 2 miles south of the top of Badger Mountain; about 1,500 feet south and 1,300 feet east of the northwest corner of section 23, T. 24N., R. 21 E. (Latitude 47 degrees 33 minutes 30 seconds N, Longitude 120 degrees 09 minutes 50 seconds W)

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 48 to 50 degrees F. These soils are usually moist in the moisture control section but are dry for 75 to 90 consecutive days following the summer solstice. The mollic epipedon is 4 to 10 inches thick. The base saturation by sum of cations is 60 to 75 percent throughout. The particle-size control section contains 35 to 65 percent rock fragments and clay content is 25 to 35 percent in the lower part. Depth to bedrock is 4 to 10 inches.

The A horizon has a hue of 7.5YR or 10YR. Chroma is 2 to 4 dry and 1 or 2 moist. It contains 15 to 35 percent rock fragments and reaction is slightly acid to neutral.

The Bt1 horizon has a hue of 5YR or 7.5YR. Value is 4 or 5 dry. Chroma is 3 or 4 dry and 2 or 3 moist. It contains 35 to 55 percent rock fragments

The Bt2 horizon has a hue of 5YR or 7.5YR. Value is 4 or 5 dry. Chroma is 3 or 4 moist. Texture is clay loam or loam. It contains 45 to 65 percent rock fragments.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Lacy, Ragpie, Reilloc, Riggins, and Wahoo series. These series are 10 to 20 inches to bedrock. In addition, the Wahoo series is dry 90 to 105 consecutive days.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Shinn soils are on mountains. Slopes are 3 to 65 percent. These soils formed in residuum and colluvium from basalt. Elevation is 2,800 to 4,200 feet. The climate is characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, moist winters. Average annual precipitation is 15 to 18 inches. Average January temperature is about 24 degrees F.; average July temperature is about 68 degrees F.; and average annual temperature is 47 to 49 degrees F. Frost-free season is 110 to 150 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Lorena, Kiakus and Stemilt soils. Kiakus and Lorena soils are moderately deep to bedrock. Stemilt soils are deep to bedrock.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: well drained, slow to rapid runoff; moderately slow permeability in Bt horizon.

USE AND VEGETATION: Shinn soils are used for livestock grazing. The potential native vegetation is Sandberg bluegrass, Thyme buckwheat, stiff sagebrush, and longleaf phlox.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Douglas and Kittitas counties, Washington. The series is of small extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Portland, Oregon

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Douglas County, Washington, 1998.

REMARKS: Diagnostic features and horizons recognized in this pedon are mollic epipedon from the surface to 5 inches, an argillic horizon from 3 to 9 inches and a lithic contact at 9 inches. The Bt horizon averages about 50 percent rock fragments.
