SHIPSHE SERIES

The Shipshe series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in loamy outwash material. They are moderately rapidly permeable in the subsoil and very rapid in the underlying material. These soils are on terraces and have slopes ranging from 0 to 12 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 35 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 51 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, mesic Typic Argiudolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Shipshe sandy loam - on a gently rolling convex 4 percent slope in a cultivated field at 970 feet elevation. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 8 inches; black (10YR 2/1) sandy loam; moderate fine granular structure; friable; many medium roots; few fine pebbles; slightly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 10 inches thick)

A--8 to 12 inches; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) sandy loam; moderate fine granular structure; friable; many fine roots; common fine pebbles; moderately acid; gradual wavy boundary. (2 to 10 inches thick)

Bt2--12 to 15 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) very gravelly sandy loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; common fine roots; thin dark brown (10YR 3/3) clay films on sand grains and as linings of some voids; moderately acid; clear wavy boundary.

Bt3--15 to 24 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) very gravelly sandy loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; thin dark brown(10YR 3/3) clay films on some sand grains and as linings of voids; moderately acid; clear wavy boundary. (The combined thickness of the B2 horizon is 8 to 22 inches.)

BC--24 to 32 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) very gravelly sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; friable; moderately acid; diffuse irregular boundary. (0 to 14 inches thick)

2C--32 to 60 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) stratified gravelly sand and sand; single grained; loose; strong effervescent; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: LaGrange County, Indiana; about 1 mile east and 3/4 mile south of Brighton; 2,000 feet north and 100 feet west of the southeast corner of sec. 31, T. 38 N., R. 11 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum and the depth to free carbonates typically are about 30 inches but range from 20 to 40 inches. The sand fraction throughout the solum and underlying material is dominantly medium and coarse.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 1 or 2. It is commonly sandy loam or loam and less commonly silt loam. The A horizon ranges from neutral to medium acid. Some pedons have an AB or BA horizon. Coarse fragments range from 2 to 15 percent by volume.

The Bt horizon has hue of 10YR, 7.5YR, or 5YR, value of 3 or 4, and chroma of 2 to 4. It is commonly gravelly or very gravelly sandy loam or gravelly sandy clay loam and subhorizons range to gravelly loamy sand, gravelly clay loam, sandy loam, loam, and sandy clay loam. It averages between 14 and 30 percent clay, 35 to 70 percent sand, and 35 to 60 percent by volume of gravel. It is slightly or medium acid. In some pedons the Bt or BC horizons extend as tongues 6 to 14 inches wide into the 2C
horizon from 6 to as much as 24 inches.

The 2C horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 3 or 4. It is stratified gravelly or very gravelly sand and sand.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no series in the same family. Lorenzo, Nineveh, and Warsaw are in closely related families. They contain less coarse fragments in the solum and are fine-loamy over sandy or sandy-skeletal.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Shipshe soils are on nearly level to sloping outwash plains. Slope gradients typically are 0 to 5 percent but range from 0 to 12 percent. The Shipshe soils formed in loamy gravelly outwash materials overlying stratified gravelly sand and sand that is calcareous. Sand throughout the solum is dominantly medium and coarser. Gravel is dominantly medium in size. The mean annual precipitation varies from 28 to 42 inches, and the mean annual temperature varies from 48 to 56 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The well drained Volinia and Elston are nearby soils. The Boyer, Oshtemo, and Fox soils are associated with Shipshe soils in some places.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is slow on the nearly level areas and medium on the sloping areas. Permeability is moderately rapid in the subsoil and very rapid in the underlying material.

USE AND VEGETATION: Soils are cropped to corn, soybeans, small grain and legume grass mixtures. Native vegetation was tall prairie grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Indiana and possibly southwestern Michigan. The series is moderate in extent - more than 10,000 acres.
