SHUBERTS SERIES

The Shuberts series consists of moderately deep, poorly drained, soils formed in sandy beach deposits underlain by limestone bedrock. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is high or very high. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 760 millimeters, and mean annual air temperature is about 5 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Mixed, frigid Typic Psammaquents

TYPICAL PEDON: Shuberts muck from an area of Shuberts-Manistique complex, 0 to 3 percent slopes in a forested area. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Oa--0 to 15 centimeters; black (N 2/0) muck; weak fine granular structure; very friable; common fine to course roots; moderately acid; abrupt wavy boundary.

C--15 to 71 centimeters; brown (10YR 5/3) sand; single grain; loose; few fine course roots in upper part; many fine distinct grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) masses of iron depletions and few fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulations; neutral; clear wavy boundary.

2R--71 centimeters; fractured, limestone bedrock

TYPE LOCATION: Major Land Resource Area 94B Michigan Eastern Upper Peninsula Sandy Drift, Schoolcraft County Michigan Subset; about 1 mile north of Seul Choix Point lighthouse; 650 feet south and 2145 feet west of the northeast corner of sec. 22, T. 41 N., R. 13 W.; USGS Seul Choix Point topographic quadrangle; Mueller Township; lat, 45 degrees 55 minutes 26 seconds N.; long. 85 degrees 52 minutes 3 seconds W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Depth to limestone bedrock - 51 to 102 centimeters
Gravel content - 0 to 35 percent throughout
Channer content - 0 to 10 percent throughout
Total rock fragment - less than 35 percent

The O horizon has hue of 7.5YR, 10YR, or is neutral and chroma of 0 or 2.

Some pedons have an A horizon with hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 1 or 2, or is neutral with a value of 2 or 3. It is mucky fine sand, fine sand, or sand.

The C horizon has a value of 4 to 7; and chroma of 1 to 4. It is sand, fine sand, loamy fine sand, loamy sand or gravelly analogues of these textures. Reaction ranges from neutral to moderately alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Bantry, Betsy Bay, Deford, Gunbarrel, Minnewauken, Seney, and Spidercreek. Bantry, Deford, Gunbarrel, Mennewauken, Seney and Spidercreek are greater than 203 centimeters to bedrock. Betsy Bay is a somewhat poorly drained soil with representative wet soil moisture status at 46 centimeters.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Shuberts soils are in depressions on sandy beach deposits adjacent to the shore of Lake Michigan. Slope gradients are 0 to 2 percent. Elevations are 180 to 185 meters. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 710 to 810 millimeters. The mean annual air temperature ranges from about 3 to 5 degrees C. The frost free period is 90 to 155 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: Manistique, Deer Park, and Chippeny soils. Manistique soils are somewhat poorly drained and are on low beach ridges. Deer Park soils are excessively drained and are on dunes and beach ridges. Chippeny soils are very poorly drained, have 41 to 130 centimeters of organic material over bedrock, and are in depressions.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Poorly drained. These soils have a representative wet soil moisture status that is at or near the surface from March to May and October to November. Ponding can occur during these same months. Surface runoff is negligible or ponded. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is high or very high.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are wooded. Common trees are northern white-cedar, balsam fir, and red maple. Ground cover vegetation includes red osier dogwood, willow shrubs, bunchberry, and naked miterwort.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Major Land Resource Area 94B Michigan Eastern Upper Peninsula Sandy Drift; Schoolcraft County Michigan Subset, December 2006. Proposed in Schoolcraft County Subset, 2001. Source of name is a lake in the county.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in the typical pedon are: Ochric epipedon - 0 to 15 centimeters
Aquic conditions - endosaturation in the C horizon is based on a presumed positive reaction with alpha,alpha-dipyridyl at some time during the year in most years. The inherent color of the parent material causes a red matrix in a reducing environment.
Lithic contact - 71 centimeters.

ADDITIONAL DATA: The pedon descriptions supporting this series concept are stored in NASIS.
