2Bw--13 to 46 centimeters; strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) loamy sand; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; common fine and medium roots; few fine faint yellowish red (5YR 5/6) and common fine distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulations; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (10 to 25 centimeters thick)
2C1--46 to 89 centimeters; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) sand; single grain; loose; few medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulations; few black (10YR 2/1) organic stains; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (30 to 76 centimeters thick)
2C2--89 to 203 centimeters; pale brown (10YR 6/3) sand; single grain; loose; slightly acid.
TYPE LOCATION: Major Land Resource Area 94B Michigan Eastern Upper Peninsula Sandy Drift, Schoolcraft County Michigan Subset; about 15 miles north of Manistique; 350 feet east, 1700 feet north of the southwest corner of sec. 28, T. 44 N., R. 15 W., USGS Marsh Creek Pool NW topographic quadrangle; lat. 46 degrees 10 minutes 38 seconds N. and long. 86 degrees 11 minutes 47 seconds W.; Hiawatha Township.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Gravel content ranges from 0 to 10 percent throughout. Depth to redox accumulations and depletions is 15 to 46 centimeters. The loamy surface averages 7 to 15 percent clay.
The A horizon has hue of 2.5YR or 5YR, value of 3, chroma of 2 to 4. Reaction is extremely acid to strongly acid. It is sandy loam and fine sandy loam.
The 2Bw horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 4 to 6. It is loamy sand or sand. Concentrations of goethite (bog iron) are 0 to 35 percent. It is extremely acid to strongly acid.
The 2C horizons have hue of 10YR, value of 5 or 6 and chroma of 3 or 4. It is sand or fine sand. Thin strata of mucky fine sand occur in some pedons at a depth of 114 to 203 centimeters. Reaction is strongly acid to slightly acid.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Bantry, Betsy Bay, Deford, Gunbarrel, Minnewaukan, Shuberts (T), and Spidercreek series. The Bantry soils have reaction from 6.1 to 8.4 in the substratum. The Betsy Bay soil has bedrock between 76 and 127 centimeters. The Deford soil have wet soil moisture status from 0 to 15 centimeters. The Gunbarrel soils have reaction from 7.9 to 11.0 throughout the profile. The Minnewaukan soils have reaction from 6.6 to 8.4 throughout the profile. The Shuberts soil has limestone bedrock between 51 and 102 centimeters. In addition none of these soils allow a loamy red surface layer containing 7 to 15 percent hydrous oxide clays.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Seney soils are on level or nearly level slopes on low braided stream terraces and broad outwash plains. These soils formed in sandy glaciofluvial deposits. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. The annual precipitation ranges from 710 to 810 millimeters. The mean annual air temperature ranges from 3 to 5 degrees C.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Duck, Meehan, Proper, and Deford soils. The moderately well drained Duck and Proper soils are on slightly higher landscape positions. The somewhat poorly drained Meehan soils are on similar landscape positions. Deford soils are in depressions.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Somewhat poorly drained. These soils have representative wet soil moisture status that ranges from 15 to 46 centimeters below the surface in October, November, March, April, May, and June. Surface runoff is low. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderate high or high in the loamy surface and high or very high in the rest of the soil. Occasionally and frequently flooded phases are recognized.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most of this soil is in woodland. Major tree species are red maple, black spruce, aspen, balsam fir, white pine, and jack pine. Common ground plants include wild-lily-of-valley, gold thread, low sweet blueberry, starflower, and bracken fern.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Major Land Resource Area 94B Michigan Eastern Upper Peninsula Sandy Drift; Schoolcraft County Michigan Subset, December 2006. Proposed in Schoolcraft Subset, Michigan, 2002. Source of name is a Township in Schoolcraft County.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in the typical pedon are:
--Ochric Epipedon - 0 to 13 centimeters
--Aquic moisture regime based on a presumed positive reaction with alpha-alpha-dipyridal at some time during the year in most years. The inherent color of the parent material causes a red matrix in reducing environment.
ADDITIONAL DATA: The pedon descriptions supporting this series concept are stored in NASIS.
