TYPICAL PEDON: Shuyak ashy loamy sand - in grass herbaceous and shrubby mountaintop shoulder at an elevation of 640 meters (2110 feet). (All colors are for moist soil unless noted.)
Oi--0 to 2 centimeters (0 to 1 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2), dry; moderately decomposed plant material; soft, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; many very fine and fine roots throughout; moderately acid (pH 6.0); clear smooth boundary.
C--2 to 5 centimeters (1 to 2 inches); light gray (10YR 7/2), very pale brown (10YR 8/2), dry; ashy loamy sand; single grain; loose, nonsticky, nonplastic; many very fine and fine roots throughout; moderately acid (pH 5.9); clear wavy boundary.
2A--5 to 10 centimeters (2 to 4 inches); black (10YR 2/1) medial silt loam; 30 percent sand; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; common very fine, fine, and medium roots throughout; moderately acid (pH 5.7); clear wavy boundary.
2Bw--10 to 41 centimeters (4 to 16 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) medial silt loam; weak fine angular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; common very fine, fine, and common medium roots throughout; 5 percent gravel and 1 percent cobble; moderately acid (pH 5.6); abrupt irregular boundary.
3R--41 to 66 centimeters (16 to 26 inches); strongly to indurated graywacke bedrock.

Ciimaq soils have spodic properties, have less than 925 mm (36 in) precipitation, and occur on similar landform positions.
Katkitos soils have metasedimentary bedrock, have mean annual precipitation between 1200 to 2000 mm (47 to 79 in), and occur in cirque platforms.
Treen soils have various bedrock types, have precipitation between 1500 to 3500 mm (59 to 138 in), have frost free periods greater than 50 days, and occur on mountain and ridge flanks, and cirque basins.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include Alakura, Ayakulik, Bidarka, Kaguyak,
Pyramid, and Tungalara.
Akalura soils lack lithic contacts, have loamy skeletal till substratum, and occur on flanks, backslopes, and foot slopes.
Ayakulik soils have lithic contact at greater than 50 cm (20 in) and occur on similar landform positions.
Bidarka soils have lithic contacts greater than 50 cm (20 in), have skeletal particle-sized control sections, and occur on similar landform positions.
Kaguyak soils have skeletal control sections and occur are similar landform positions.
Pyramid soils have spodic horizons, have skeletal control sections and occur on similar landform positions.
Tungalara soils have lithic contacts, have skeletal control sections, and occur on flanks, backslopes, and foot slopes.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage class: well drained
Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity: very high in the Oe horizon, moderately high to very high in the C horizon, moderately high or high in the 2A and 2Bw horizons, and very low or low in the 3R.
Permeability: rapid or very rapid in the Oe horizon, moderate to very rapid in the C horizon, moderate to rapid in the 2A and Bw horizons, and impermeable or very slow in the 3R.
Runoff: high to very high.
USE AND VEGETATION: ????
Used for rangeland on slopes less than 45%. The native vegetation includes Sitka spruce, salmonberry, devils club, moss, alder, dwarf dogwood, Canada goldenrod, fireweed, tufted hairgrass, bluejoint grass, red fescue, and geraniums.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: MLRA 220 Alexander Archipelago-Gulf of Alaska Coast and MLRA 225 Southern Alaska Peninsula Mountains.
Extent: extensive.
