TYPICAL PEDON: Kaguyak very gravelly medial silt loam - on grass herbaceous at elevation of 185 meters (615 feet). (All colors are for moist soil unless noted.)

Oe--0 to 3 centimeters (0 to 1 inches); dark brown (7.5YR 3/2), brown (7.5YR 4/2), dry; moderately decomposed plant material; soft, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; many very fine, fine, and common medium roots throughout; extremely acid (pH 3.8); abrupt smooth boundary.

A--3 to 11 centimeters (1 to 4 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2), dry; very gravelly medial silt loam; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; many very fine, fine, and common medium roots throughout; 40 percent gravel and 5 percent cobble; strongly acid (pH 5.4); clear wavy boundary.

Bw--11 to 43 centimeters (4 to 17 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4), yellowish brown (10YR 5/4), dry; very gravelly medial silt loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; common fine roots throughout; 40 percent gravel and 5 percent cobble; strongly acid (pH 5.4); abrupt irregular boundary.

2R--43 to 68 centimeters (17 to 27 inches); strongly to indurated graywacke bedrock.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include Akalura, Ayakulik, Bidarka, Kazakof, Spiridon, and Shuyak.
Akalura soils lack lithic contacts, have loamy skeletal till substratum, and occur on flanks, backslopes, and foot slopes.
Ayakulik soils have lithic contact greater than 50 cm (20 in), lack skeletal control sections, and occur are similar landform positions.
Bidarka soils have lithic contacts greater than 50 cm (20 in) and occur on similar landform positions.
Kazakof soils have are lithic contact at depths greater than 50 cm (20 in), and occur on similar landform positions.
Spiridon soils have lithic contacts greater than 50 cm (20 in), have loamy skeletal till substratum above the lithic contact, and occur on similar landform positions.
Shuyak soils lack skeletal particle-sized control sections and occur are similar landform positions.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage class: well drained
Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity: very high in the Oe horizon and moderately high to high in the A and Bw horizons, very low or low in the 2R.
Permeability: rapid to very rapid in the Oe horizon, moderately rapid to rapid in the A and B horizons., and impermeable to very slow in the 2R.
Runoff: high to very high.

USE AND VEGETATION:
Used for rangeland on slopes less than 45%. The native vegetation includes Sitka spruce, salmonberry, devils club, moss, alder, dwarf dogwood, Canada goldenrod, fireweed, tufted hairgrass, bluejoint grass, red fescue, and geraniums.

Gulf of Alaska Coast and MLRA 225 Southern Alaska Peninsula Mountains.
Extent: extensive.
