SYBIL SERIES

The Sybil series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in loamy and sandy outwash sediments on glacial outwash plains, till plains, and moraines. They have moderately rapid permeability in the upper part and rapid permeability in the underlying material. Slopes range from 0 to 50 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 42 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is about 24 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Mollic Hapludalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Sybil loamy sand with a 4 percent slope in a cropland field. (All colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 5 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) loamy sand; brown (10YR 5/3) dry; weak fine and medium granular structure; very friable; common fine roots; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 9 inches thick)

E--5 to 10 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) loamy sand; pale brown (10YR 6/3) dry; weak fine granular structure; very friable; few fine roots; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (3 to 10 inches thick)

Bt1--10 to 15 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) sandy loam; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; friable; common continuous faint dark brown (10YR 3/3) clay films on faces of peds and in pores; common discontinuous distinct white (10YR 8/2) sand coatings on faces of peds; few fine roots; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (3 to 14 inches thick)

Bt2--15 to 23 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) loamy sand; single grain; loose; common patchy faint dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) clay bridging between sand grains; few fine roots; neutral; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt3--23 to 32 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) loamy sand; single grain; loose; common discontinuous faint dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) clay bridging between sand grains and as thin lamellae; neutral; gradual smooth boundary. (combined thickness of the Bt2 and Bt3 is 3 to 20 inches)

C--32 to 80 inches; brown (10YR 5/4) sand; single grain; loose; 3 percent gravel; neutral.

TYPE LOCATION: Otter Tail County, Minnesota; about 6 miles south of Perham; 3850 feet north and 1400 feet west of the southeast corner of Section 16, T.135 N., R.39 W.; Perham Quadrangle; latitude 46 degrees 30 minutes 34 seconds N. and longitude 95 degrees 35 minutes 59 seconds W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to free carbonates range from 40 to more than 60 inches. The depth to the upper Bt horizon or loamy lamellae ranges from 12 to 19 inches. Volume of rock fragments throughout the series control section averages less than 10 percent. Most rock fragments are pebble size. The soil moisture control section is not dry in any part for as long as 90 cumulative days in most years.

The A or Ap horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2 or 3 and chroma of 1 to 3. The dry colors have values less than 5.5 It is loamy fine sand, loamy sand, or sandy loam. It is moderately acid to neutral.

The E horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 2 to 4. It is loamy sand, loamy coarse sand, or loamy fine sand. It is moderately acid to neutral. In cultivated areas all or parts of the E horizon have been incorporated into the Ap horizon.

Some pedons have E/B, EB, B/E, or BE horizons.

The upper Bt horizon has a hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 to 5 and chroma of 3 to 6. It is sandy loam, coarse sandy loam, or fine sandy loam with occassional subhorizons that are sandy clay loam or loam. It is composed of either continuous or discontinuous horizons or layers with a composite thickness greater than 3 inches. It is moderately acid to neutral.

The lower Bt horizon has a hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 to 5 and chroma of 3 or 4. It is loamy sand, loamy fine sand, or sand. It is either a continuous horizon or has discontinuous layers with clay coatings on the sand grains or bridging between sand grains. It is moderately acid to neutral.

Some pedons have a Bw horizon with colors and textures similar to the lower Bt horizon but lack clay bridging.

The C horizon has a hue of 10YR, 2.5Y, or 7.5YR, value of 5 to 7 and chroma of 2 to 6. It is sand or coarse sand. It is slightly acid to moderately alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Boyette, Holdingford, Lida(T) and Rockwood soils. Boyette soils are dry in some or all parts of the soil moisture control section for more than 90 cumulative days in most years. Lida soils have more than 10 percent rock fragments in the lower part of the series control section. The Holdingford and Rockwood soils formed in glacial till and do not have sandy textures within the lower half of the series control section.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Sybil soils have plane or convex slopes on glacial outwash plains, till plains and moraines that formed in loamy and sandy outwash sediments. Slope gradients range from 0 to 50 percent. Mean annual air temperature is 38 to 42 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 23 to 28 inches. Annual frost free days range from 110 to 140 days. The elevation above sea level ranges from 1000 to 1800 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bluffcreek(T), Epoufette, Lida(T), Graycalm, and Pinelake(T) soils. The somewhat excessively drained Graycalm soils are on similar position in the landscape. The moderately well drained Bluffcreek soils are on nearly level areas or in shallow swales. The poorly drained Epoufette and Pinelake soils are in shallow depressions or on edges of organic soils.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is slow to medium. Permeability is moderately rapid in the upper part and rapid in the underlying material.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are in cropland or used for pasture with scattered woodland areas. Native vegetation is quaking aspen, upland oaks, sugar maple, and basswood.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: West central Minnesota. Inextensive.
