COMPETING SERIES: These are the Aptakisic, Caseyville, Creal, Fitchville, Iva, Kendall, Stronghurst, Waynetown, and Yeddo series. Aptakisic soils have carbonates at a depth of 51 to 102 cm (20 to 40 inches). Caseyville, Fitchville, Iva, Stronghurst, and Yeddo soils average less than 15 percent sand in the lower parts of the series control section. Creal soils have a depth to the top of the argillic horizon ranging from 61 to 91 cm (24 to 36 inches). Kendall soils do not have horizons with more than 15 percent sand within a depth of 102 cm (40 inches). Waynetown soils have more than 15 percent gravel in the lower part of the series control section.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Starks soils are on outwash plains, stream terraces, and alluvial fans. Slope ranges from 0 to 5 percent. These soils formed in 61 to 102 cm (24 to 40 inches) of loess or other silty material and in the underlying loamy stratified outwash. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 8 to 12 degrees C (46 to 54 degrees F), mean annual precipitation ranges from 740 to 1020 mm (29 to 40 inches), frost-free period ranges from 140 to 180 days, and elevation ranges from 104 to 415 meters (340 to 1,360 feet) above sea level.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Brooklyn, Camden, Millbrook, and Sexton soils. The poorly drained Brooklyn and Sexton soils are lower on the landscape. The well drained Camden soils are on slightly higher or more sloping parts of the landscape. Millbrook soils are on similar landscapes nearby and form a biosequence with Starks soils. Camden and Sexton soils form a hydrosequence with Starks soils.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Somewhat poorly drained. An intermittent apparent seasonal high water table is present at a depth of 15 to 61 cm (0.5 to 2.0 feet) below the surface at some time between January and May in normal years. The potential for surface runoff is negligible to low. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderately high or high (4.23 to 14.11 micrometers per second). Permeability is moderate.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are cultivated. Corn, soybeans, and small grain are the principal crops. Some areas are wooded. Native vegetation is deciduous hardwood forest.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Illinois and Indiana. The extent is large in MLRAs 95B, 108A, 108B, 110, 111A, 111B, 111D, 113, 114B, 115A, and 115C.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Indianapolis, Indiana.
