Oi--0 to 9 cm (0 to 4 in); slightly decomposed plant material, dark brown (7.5YR 3/3) moist, brown (7.5YR 5/3) dry; nonsticky, nonplastic; common very fine and many fine roots throughout; moderately acid (pH 5.9); clear boundary. (3 to 10 cm, 1 to 4 in thick)

Oa--9 to 12 cm (4 to 5 in); highly decomposed plant material, dark reddish brown (5YR 2.5/2) moist, dark reddish gray (5YR 4/2) dry; nonsticky, nonplastic; common very fine and many fine roots throughout; slightly acid (pH 6.5); clear wavy boundary. (1 to 4 cm, 0.5 to 2 in thick)

A--12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in); silt, very dark brown (7.5YR 2.5/2) moist, brown (7.5YR 4/2) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly hard, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; nonsmeary; common fine roots throughout; fine dendritic tubular pores; slightly acid (pH 6.5); clear wavy boundary. Bw--15 to 30 cm (6 to 12 in); gravelly loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist, light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky parts to moderate medium granular structure; friable, slightly hard, nonsticky, nonplastic; nonsmeary; few fine roots throughout; fine dendritic tubular pores; 30 percent gravel; neutral (pH 6.9); clear wavy boundary. (5 to 20 cm, 2 to 8 in thick)

Bg1--30 to 55 cm (12 to 22 in); very gravelly silt loam, gray (10YR 5/1) moist, light gray (10YR 7/1) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky parts to moderate medium granular structure; friable, slightly hard, nonsticky, nonplastic; nonsmeary; very fine irregular pores; 20 percent irregular strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) masses of oxidized iron; 40 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.1); clear wavy boundary. COMPETING SERIES: This is the Lowder (MT, ID, & WY) series.
Lowder soils are very poorly drained, have a mean annual soil temperature greater than 3 degrees C. (37 degrees F.), and occur on alluvial fans, moraines, swales, and flood plain steps.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Egoosikcreek, Sagvaktuk, Sikuruk, Tui, Atkaktuk, Continentaldivide, and Brasspancreek soils.
Egoosikcreek soils have a mollic epipedon and occur on mountain swales.
Sagvaktuk soils have a coarse-loamy particle size class and occur on drainageways of mountain valleys.
Sikuruk soils have permafrost within 50 to 100 cm (20 to 40 in) and occur on similar landforms on shoulder positions.
Tui soils are well drained and occur on similar landforms on backslope positions.
Atkaktuk soils have an umbric epipedon and occur on similar landforms on backslope positions.
Continentaldivide soils have a mollic epipedon and occur on ridges of mountains.
Brasspancreek soils do not have a cambic horizon and occur on floodplains of drainageways.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage class: somewhat poorly drained
Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity: very high in the O horizons, moderately high in the A and Cg horizons, and moderately high to high in the Bw and Bg horizons
Permeability: rapid to very rapid in the O horizons, moderate in the A and Cg horizons, and moderate to moderately rapid in the Bw and Bg horizons

USE AND VEGETATION:
Use: wildlife habitat, recreation, and subsistence
Native vegetation: splendid feather moss, Schreber's big red stem moss, tealeaf willow, bluejoint, moss, boreal sagebrush, Altai fescue, dwarf raspberry, tall bluebells, arctic sweet coltsfoot, feltleaf willow, and dwarf birch.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: MLRA 240, Nulato Hills-Southern Seward Peninsula Highlands. The series is of moderate extent.
