TOMBALL SERIES


The Tomball series consists of very deep, poorly drained, very slowly permeable soils that formed in loamy fluviomarine deposits derived from the Willis Formation. These nearly level soils occur in open ended depressions on inland dissected coastal plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 1 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 1143 mm (45 in), and mean annual air temperature is about 19.5 degrees C (67 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, siliceous, semiactive, hyperthermic Typic Epiaqualfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Tomball loam, in open depression, elevation is 83.8m (275 ft). (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 20 cm, (0 to 8 in); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; many very fine roots and common fine roots; common very fine tubular and many fine interstitial pores; few crawfish krotovinas; 5 percent fine distinct dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) masses of oxidized iron with sharp boundaries lining pores; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (18 to 36 cm [7 to 14 in] thick)

E--20 to 45 cm, (8 to 18 in); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; common very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; few crawfish krotovinas; 3 percent fine and medium distinct dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) manganese coatings with clear boundaries in matrix and 5 percent fine distinct dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) masses of oxidized iron with sharp boundaries lining pores; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (15 to 35 cm [6 to 14 in] thick)

Bt1--45 to 77 cm, (18 to 30 in); dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; common very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; common crawfish krotovinas; 15 percent clay films; 3 percent fine distinct black (10YR 2/1) manganese masses with sharp boundaries in matrix and 5 percent fine prominent dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) iron-manganese masses with sharp boundaries lining pores; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizons is 56 to 102 cm {22 to 40 in])

Bt2--77 to 120 cm, (30 to 47 in); gray (10YR 5/1) clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; common very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; common crawfish krotovinas filled with filled with pink (7.5YR 7/3) fine sand and lined with dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay loam; 10 percent clay films; 3 percent fine prominent yellowish red (5YR 5/6) iron-manganese masses with sharp boundaries lining pores and 5 percent coarse prominent black (10YR 2/1) manganese masses with sharp boundaries in matrix and 10 percent medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron with sharp boundaries in matrix; moderately acid; gradual wavy boundary.

Btg1--120 to 146 cm, (47 to 58 in); dark gray (N 4/), clay loam; moderate coarse subangular blocky structure; firm; common very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; common crawfish krotovinas filled with filled with pink (7.5YR 7/3) fine sand and lined with dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay loam; 10 percent gray (10YR 6/1) clay films; 5 percent medium prominent black (10YR 2/1) manganese masses with sharp boundaries in matrix and 30 percent medium and coarse prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron with sharp boundaries in matrix; neutral; gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Btg horizons is 63 to 94 cm [25 to 37 in])

Btg2--146 to 163 cm, (58 to 64 in); gray (N 5/), clay loam; moderate coarse subangular blocky structure; firm; common very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; common crawfish krotovinas filled with filled with pink (7.5YR 7/3) fine sand and lined with dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay loam; 15 percent gray (10YR 6/1) clay films; 1 percent medium spherical strongly cemented dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) ironstone nodules in matrix and 1 percent medium prominent dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4)iron-manganese masses with sharp boundaries in matrix and 8 percent medium and coarse prominent black (10YR 2/1) manganese masses with sharp boundaries in matrix and 20 percent coarse prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron with sharp boundaries throughout; neutral; gradual wavy boundary.

Btg3--163 to 203 cm, (64 to 80 in); gray (N 6/), clay loam; moderate coarse subangular blocky structure; firm; common very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; common crawfish krotovinas filled with filled with pink (7.5YR 7/3) fine sand and lined with dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay loam; 15 percent gray (10YR 6/1) clay films; 5 percent medium prominent red (2.5YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron with sharp boundaries in matrix and 10 percent coarse prominent black (10YR 2/1) manganese masses with sharp boundaries in matrix and 25 percent coarse prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron with sharp boundaries throughout; slightly alkaline.

Waller County, TX; from the intersection of Owens Road and University Drive on the Prairie View A&M University campus, about 1.2 miles east on Owens Road; located about 800 feet north in pasture.

There are no series in the same family. Similar soils are the Aris, Cieno, Gessner, and Rexville (T) series.
Aris soils: are in a fine-silty particle-sized family
Cieno and Gessner soils: have more than 50 percent crawfish krotovinas
Rexville soils: are in an active CEC to clay class; do not have an E horizon

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:
These are the Hockley and Wockley series.
Hockley soils: well drained; side slopes of hills
Wockley soils: somewhat poorly drained; on toeslopes of hills

Runoff: negligible
Flooding: none
Ponding: frequent, for long duration, during the months of January to April in normal years
Wetness: seasonal water table by episaturation from 0 to 77 cm (0 to 2.5 ft) during the months of January to May in normal years.

USE AND VEGETATION:
Used for pastureland or wildlife habitat. Native vegetation consists of rushes, sedges, and paspalums.

SERIES PROPOSED: Waller County, Texas, 2018. The name is from a town in Harris County.

REMARKS: The series was formerly included in the Gessner and Waller series. The series was separated based on geology, landform, and MLRA. Gessner and Waller soils are on the Lissie Formation. Gessner soils are in oval depressions and Waller soils are on flats. In addition, Waller soils are in MLRA 152B (Western Gulf Coast Flatwoods)
