TRADELAKE SERIES

The Tradelake series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils formed in loamy alluvium over clayey lacustrine deposits underlain by sandy outwash or sandy lacustrine deposits on lake plains. Permeability is moderate in the loamy deposits and slow or very slow in the clayey deposits and rapid in the sandy substratum. Slopes range from 1 to 35 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 41 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy over clayey, mixed over smectitic, superactive, frigid Oxyaquic Glossudalfs

2Bt3--31 to 48 inches; 80 percent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/3) and 20 percent reddish brown (5YR 5/3) clay; moderate medium prismatic structure; very firm; few very fine roots; few fine tubular pores; many prominent continuous brown (7.5YR 4/4) pressure faces; common medium prominent grayish brown (10YR 5/2) iron depletions and strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; neutral; clear wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the 2Bt horizon ranges from 6 to 30 inches.)

2Btg4--48 to 52 inches; 70 percent olive gray (5Y 5/2) and 20 percent dark olive gray (5Y 3/2) and 10 percent reddish brown (5YR 5/3) clay; moderate medium prismatic structure; very firm; few very fine tubular pores; common prominent discontinuous brown (7.5YR 4/4) pressure faces; few fine prominent brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) masses of iron accumulation; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 30 inches thick)

3C--52 to 80 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/4) sand; single grain; loose; 10 percent gravel; slightly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Burnett County, Wisconsin; about 6 miles southeast of Grantsburg; located about 60 feet west and 550 feet north of the southeast corner of section 35, T. 38 N., R. 18 W.; USGS Trade Lake topographic quadrangle; lat. 45 degrees 43 minutes 49 seconds N. and long. 92 degrees 32 minutes 56 seconds W., NAD 83.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to the base of the argillic horizon ranges from 35 to 60 inches. Thickness of the loamy mantle and depth to clay ranges from 15 to 35 inches. Reaction naturally ranges from strongly acid to slightly acid in the surface, subsurface, and upper part of the subsoil but ranges to neutral where the soil is limed. The clayey part of the subsoil is strongly acid to neutral and the lower loamy part of the subsoil is moderately acid to slightly alkaline. Content of gravel in the upper loamy mantle ranges from 0 to 10 percent and volume of cobbles ranges from 0 to 3 percent. Volume of gravel in the clayey lacustrine deposits ranges from 0 to 1 percent and from 0 to 14 percent in the sandy substratum. Clay content of the particle-size control section ranges from 6 to 18 percent as a weighted average.

The Ap horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 2 to 4, and chroma of 2 or 3. Some pedons have an A horizon, 1 to 3 inches thick, with hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 2 to 3, and chroma of 1 or 2. Texture is fine sandy loam.

Some pedons have a Bw horizon with hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 to 5 and chroma of 3 or 4. Texture is fine sandy loam or sandy loam.

The E horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5, and chroma of 2 or 3. Texture is fine sandy loam or sandy loam.

Tradelake soils have a glossic horizon (E/B or B/E horizons, or both). The E part has colors and textures like the E horizon described above. The Bt part has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 4 to 6. Texture is sandy loam or fine sandy loam.

The Bt horizon has colors and textures like the Bt part described above.

The 2Bt horizon has hue of 2.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is clay or silty clay. Clay content ranges from 60 to 80 percent.

The 2Btg horizon has hue of 2.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 1 or 2. Texture is clay or silty clay. Clay content ranges from 60 to 80 percent.

The 3C horizon has hue of 5YR, 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 3 to 5. Texture is sand or loamy sand.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

Landform--glacial lake plains
Slope--1 to 35 percent
Elevation--930 to 980 feet
Mean annual air temperature--39 to 41 degrees F
Mean annual precipitation--28 to 33 inches
Frost-free period--110 to 130 days

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Siren and Taylor soils. The somewhat poorly drained Siren series occupies sightly lower landscape positions. The moderately well drained Taylor soils are on similar landscape positions but lack the loamy upper mantle and the sandy substratum.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained. Runoff is low to high. Permeability is moderate in the loamy upper mantle, and slow or very slow in the clayey deposits and rapid in the sandy substratum. This soil has a seasonal high perched zone of saturation at depths as high as 2 feet in April to June in normal years.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most of this soil is used for cultivated cropland. Commom crops are such as hay, small grain, and corn. Some areas are used for woodland. Native vegetation is hardwood forest with scattered conifers.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Wisconsin. LRR K, MLRA 90B. This soil is of small extent.
