TYPICAL PEDON: Tamanos gravelly ashy loamy sand on a north-facing alpine glacier with a slope of 5 percent and at an elevation of 1155 m (When described on July 24, 2012, the soil was moist throughout.)
A--0 to 20 cm; gravelly ashy loamy sand, very dark gray (5YR 3/1) dry, black (5YR 2.5/1) moist; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine and fine roots; common very fine and fine interstitial pores; 5 percent fine andesite gravel, 15 percent medium and coarse andesite gravel, and 10 percent andesite cobbles; slightly acid (pH 6.4); clear wavy boundary
C--20 to 50 cm; very gravelly ashy loamy sand, gray (7.5YR 5/1) dry, very dark gray (5YR 3/1) moist; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and fine interstitial pores; 10 percent fine andesite gravel, 20 percent medium and coarse andesite gravel, and 15 percent andesite cobbles; slightly acid (pH 6.4); abrupt wavy boundary

TYPE LOCATION: Pierce County, Washington, at the terminus of Carbon Glacier, about 11 km southeast of the Carbon River Ranger Station in Mount Rainier National Park; about 640 m north and 315 m east of the southwest corner of section 22, T. 17 N., R. 8 E., Willamette Meridian; Mowich Lake, Washington, U.S. Geological Survey quadrangle; latitude 46.942203 degrees north, longitude 121.787800 degrees west, datum WGS 84 (coordinates determined with a GPS)
