VICENTE SERIES

The Vicente series consists of very deep and well drained soils formed in stratified alluvium. Vicente soils are on flood plains, and have slopes of 0 to 3 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 8 inches and the mean annual air temperature ranges from 72 to 83 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-silty, mixed, superactive, calcareous, hyperthermic Ustic Torrifluvents

TYPICAL PEDON: Vicente loam-cultivated. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 9 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; very hard, very friable; moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few fine and medium roots; few fine irregular pores; violently effervescent; slightly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary (6 to 10 inches thick).

C1--9 to 13 inches; light brownish gray(10YR 6/2) clay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; very hard, very friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common fine and very fine medium roots, common fine and very fine, tubular pores; violently effervescent; slightly alkaline; clear smooth boundary (3 to 5 inches thick).

C2--13 to 29 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; very hard, very friable; slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine and very fine, roots; few fine, tubular pores; violently effervescent; slightly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary (14 to 18 inches thick).

C3--29 to 39 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; massive; very hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine and very fine roots; few fine tubular pores; violently effervescent; slightly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundaries (10 to 13 inches thick).

C4--39 to 49 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) silt loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; very hard, very friable; slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine and very fine roots; few fine tubular pores; violently effervescent; slightly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundaries (8 to 10 inches thick).

C5--49 to 80 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; very hard, very friable; slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine and very fine roots; few fine tubular pores; violently effervescent; slightly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundaries.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Vicente soils are on flood plains. Slopes are dominantly 0 to 1 percent but range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual precipitation is 10 to 13 inches, with most of it occurring in the summer months. Mean annual air temperature is 68 to 72 degrees F. Frost-free period is from 240 to 280 days, and elevation ranges from 1,800 to 3,995 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Castolon, Paloblanco, Galindo, and Lomapelona series. Castolon soils are fine-silty, Paloblanco soils are fine-loamy, Galindo soils are clayey over loamy, and Lomapelona soils are coarse-loamy.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability is rapid to moderate. Runoff is negligible on slopes less than 1 percent and low on slopes 1 to 3 percent.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for livestock grazing and where irrigated for cultivated crops and pastures. Cotton, alfalfa, and grains are common irrigated crops. The vegetation consists of chino grama, creosote bush, prickly pear, salt cedar, mesquite, and palo verde.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: West Texas. MLRA 42. The series is of moderate extent.
