WABBASEKA SERIES

The Wabbaseka series consist of very deep, moderately well drained, very slowly permeable soils that formed in clayey and loamy alluvium. These level to nearly level soils are on flood plains. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual temperature is 64 degrees F. and mean annual precipitation is 50 inches near the type location.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey over loamy, mixed, active, thermic Fluventic Hapludolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Wabbaseka clay - cultivated. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 4 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) clay; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; plastic; many fine roots; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary. (3 to 8 inches thick)

Bw1--4 to 14 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) clay; moderate medium and coarse blocky structure; firm; plastic; common fine roots; neutral; abrupt wavy boundary. (5 to 14 inches thick)

Bw2--14 to 18 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) silty clay; moderate medium blocky structure; firm; plastic; few fine roots; neutral; abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 6 inches thick)

2C1--18 to 26 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/4) loam; massive; friable; neutral; abrupt wavy boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)

2C2--26 to 42 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) fine sandy loam; massive; very friable; slightly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)

2C3--42 to 80 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) loamy fine sand with few 1/16 to 1/8 inch strata of brown (7.5YR 4/4) loam; single grained; loose; slightly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Jefferson County, Arkansas; approximately 2 and 3/4 miles north and 1/4 mile west of Linwood; NW1/4NW1/4SE1/4 sec. 18, T. 6 S., R. 7 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Thickness of the clayey horizons ranges from 12 to 20 inches, and clay content averages 35 to 70.

The A horizon has hue of 5YR, value of 3 and chroma of 2 or 3; hue of 10YR, value of 3 and chroma of 2 or 3, or value of 2 and chroma of 2; or hue of 7.5YR and value of 3 and chroma of 2. Texture is silty clay loam, silty clay or clay. The A horizon is neutral or mildly alkaline and is noncalcareous.

The Bw1 horizon has hue of 5YR or 10YR, value of 3 and chroma of 2 or 3; or hue of 7.5YR, value of 3 and chroma of 2. Texture is silty clay loam, silty clay or clay. The Bw1 horizon is neutral or mildly alkaline and is noncalcareous.

The Bw2 horizon has hue of 5YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 and chroma of 4 or 6, or value of 5 and chroma of 4, 6, or 8. Texture is silty clay loam, silty clay or clay. The Bw1 horizon is neutral or mildly alkaline and is noncalcareous.

The 2C horizon has hue of 5YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 and chroma of 4 or 6, or value of 5 or 6 and chroma of 4, 6, or 8. Textures are silt loam, fine sandy loam, very fine sandy loam, loam, loamy fine sand, or loamy sand. Reaction range from slightly acid through moderately alkaline. Horizons below 40 inches have bedding planes or have thin strata of finer textures.

COMPETING SERIES: Wabbaseka is the only series in the family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Wabbaseka soils are on level to nearly level alluvial plains of the Arkansas River. The soils formed in clayey alluvium 12 to 20 inches thick overlying loamy alluvium. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. These soils commonly occur on side slopes and ridge tops in a ridge-swale landscape. The mean annual temperature ranges from 62 to 66 degrees F. and the mean annual precipitation ranges from 46 to 52 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: Wabbaseka soils are closely associated with the Latanier series, which often occurs on adjacent foot slopes and swales, in a ridge-swale complex, and the Desha, Coushatta, Roxana, and Oklared series. Desha soils, which occur on adjacent broad flats are clayey throughout. Coushatta, Roxana, and Oklared soils, which occur on adjacent natural levees, are loamy throughout and do not have mollic epipedons.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained; runoff is moderate; very slow permeability. Most areas are subject to flooding unless protected by levees.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are cultivated. Rice, cotton and soybeans are the principal crops. Principal trees in forested areas include cottonwood, cherrybark oak, water oak, sweetgum, pecan, sycamore, and green ash.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Arkansas River flood plain in Arkansas and Oklahoma and possibly the Red River flood plain in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma. The series is of small extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Morgantown, West Virginia

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Jefferson County, Arkansas; 1975.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this series are:

Mollic epipedon-the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 14 inches.

Cambic horizon-the zone from 4 to 18 inches.

The Wabbaseka soils formerly were classified in the Alluvial great soil group and included with the Latanier soils.
