WOODSBORO SERIES


The Woodsboro series consists of very deep, poorly drained, very slowly permeable soils that formed in fluviomarine deposits of Pleistocene age. These nearly level soils are in drainageways on the Texas Gulf Coastal Plain. Slope ranges from 0 to 1 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 21.1 degrees C (70 degrees F.) and mean annual precipitation is about 864 mm (34 in).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, hyperthermic Vertic Natraqualfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Woodsboro loam, -- on a southeast facing, concave, 0.2 percent slope in rangeland at an elevation of 23 m (90 ft). (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 15 cm (0 to 6 in); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2), dry; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure parting to weak fine granular; firm, hard, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many very fine and common fine roots; common fine tubular pores; 1 percent faint light gray (10YR 7/2) sand coats on all faces of peds; 5 percent fine distinct dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries lining pores; EC is 1.2; SAR is 13; neutral; clear smooth boundary. [8 to 23 cm (3 to 9 in) thick]

Btng1--15 to 51 cm (6 to 20 in); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) clay, grayish brown (10YR 5/2), dry; moderate medium and coarse angular blocky structure parting to moderate fine and medium angular blocky; very firm, very hard, very sticky, very plastic; common fine roots and many very fine roots; common fine tubular pores; 1 percent distinct light gray (10YR 7/2) sand coats on vertical faces of peds; 10 percent distinct very dark gray (10YR 3/1) organic stains on all faces of peds; 10 percent distinct pressure faces; 20 percent distinct clay films on vertical faces of peds; 2 percent fine distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix; EC is 2.8; SAR is 23; very slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual wavy boundary.

Btng2--51 to 66 cm (20 to 26 in); gray (10YR 5/1) clay, gray (10YR 6/1), dry; strong medium and coarse angular blocky structure parting to moderate fine and medium angular blocky; very firm, very hard, very sticky, very plastic; common fine roots and many very fine roots; common fine tubular pores; 3 percent distinct light gray (10YR 7/2) sand coats on vertical faces of peds; 3 percent distinct very dark brown (10YR 2/2) organic stains on all faces of peds; 5 percent prominent pressure faces on vertical faces of peds; 20 percent distinct clay films on vertical faces of peds; 1 percent fine prominent dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) masses of oxidized iron with diffuse boundaries lining pores; 2 percent fine distinct light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix; 5 percent fine and medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix; EC is 5.0; SAR is 36; very slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual wavy boundary.

Btng3--66 to 81 cm (26 to 32 in); gray (10YR 6/1) sandy clay, light gray (10YR 7/1), dry; strong medium and coarse angular blocky structure parting to moderate fine and medium angular blocky; very firm, very hard, very sticky, very plastic; many very fine roots; common fine tubular pores; 2 percent prominent light gray (10YR 7/2) sand coats on vertical faces of peds; 10 percent prominent pressure faces on vertical faces of peds; 15 percent distinct clay films on vertical faces of peds; 1 percent fine distinct spherical black (10YR 2/1) masses of manganese with sharp boundaries in matrix; 2 percent fine and medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix; 2 percent fine prominent dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) masses of oxidized iron with sharp boundaries lining pores; 5 percent fine and medium distinct light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix; 10 percent fine and medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix; EC is 8.0; SAR is 53; very slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual wavy boundary. Btkn1--81 to 97 cm (32 to 38 in); grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) clay loam, light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2), dry; moderate medium and coarse angular blocky structure; very firm, very hard, very sticky, very plastic; many very fine roots; common fine tubular pores; 5 percent distinct clay films on vertical faces of peds; 5 percent distinct grayish brown (10YR 5/2) organic stains on all faces of peds; 5 percent fine and medium nodules of calcium carbonate; 7 percent fine to coarse masses of calcium carbonate; 3 percent fine distinct spherical black (10YR 2/1) masses of manganese with sharp boundaries in matrix; 2 percent fine and medium distinct dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries lining pores; EC is 4.5; SAR is 18; slightly effervescent; strongly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary.

Btkn2--97 to 137 cm (38 to 54 in); light yellowish brown (2.5Y 6/3) sandy clay loam, pale yellow (2.5Y 7/3), dry; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; firm, hard, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; common very fine roots; common fine tubular pores; 5 percent faint clay films on vertical faces of peds; 2 percent faint grayish brown (10YR 5/2) organic stains on all faces of peds; 4 percent fine and medium nodules of calcium carbonate; 3 percent fine to coarse masses of calcium carbonate; 1 percent fine distinct spherical black (10YR 2/1) masses of manganese with sharp boundaries in matrix; 2 percent fine and medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix; EC is 4.8; SAR is 20; slightly effervescent; strongly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. Btkn4--168 to 203 cm (66 to 80 in); light gray (2.5Y 7/2) sandy clay loam, pale yellow (2.5Y 8/2), dry; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; firm, slightly hard, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; common very fine roots; 5 percent faint clay films on vertical faces of peds; 3 percent fine and medium carbonate masses; 1 percent medium nodules of calcium carbonate;1 percent fine distinct olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries lining pores; 3 percent fine and medium distinct light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix; EC is 4.2; SAR is 22; slightly effervescent; strongly alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Refugio County, TX; from the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and U.S. Highway 183 in Refugio, 11.3 miles north on U.S. Highway 77, 6.4 miles northwest on ranch road to Welder West Headquarters, 0.7 mile west on ranch road, 0.2 mile north on ranch road and about 300 feet west in rangeland. Latitude: 28 degrees, 29 minutes, 4 seconds N; Longitude: 97 degrees, 13 minutes, 12.2 seconds W. USGS Vidauri topographic quadrangle; NAD 83.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family. Similar soils are the Livia (TX), Narta (TX), and Palacios (TX) series.

Precipitation pattern: The majority of rainfall occurs from May to October. The driest period is from November to April.
Frost-free period: 280 to 305 days

Elevation: 6.1 to 30.5 m (20 to 100 feet)
Thornwaite annual P-E indices: 40 to 46

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Greta, Inari, Vidauri, and Wyick series.
Greta soils: have less clay in the upper subsoil layer, are somewhat poorly drained, and are on flats on the coastal plain
Inari soils: are moderately well drained, have lower salinity values, and are on old meander ridges on the coastal plain
Vidauri soils: have lower salinity values and are on flats on the coastal plain
Wyick soils: are moderately well drained, have lower salinity values, and are on flats on the coastal plain

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. Permeability is very slow. Runoff is negligible. These soils are rarely flooded for very brief periods after high rainfall events and are saturated with reducing conditions from the soil surface to 81 cm (0 to 32 in) during the months of September through and from April to June.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mostly livestock grazing and wildlife habitat; typical vegetation include salt tolerant species. Salty Prairie PE 31-44 (R150AY540TX)

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Gulf Coast Prairies (MLRA 150A on LRR T) on the coastal plain of Texas from the tributaries of the San Antonio River to the Mission River; small extent.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Refugio County, Texas, 2009. The name is from a community in Refugio County

REMARKS: These soils were originally included in the Narta series. The Narta soils are located at elevations less than 6 m (20 ft) above sea level along the Texas Gulf Coast in MLRA 150B and are subject to flooding due to storm surge during tropical disturbances.
