TYPE LOCATION: Georgetown County, South Carolina; 3 miles south of the center of the town of Georgetown on U.S. Highway 17 to S.C. Highway 42; west on S,C, Highway 42 for 3.7 miles to field road under high voltage power lines; south on field road for 0.1 mile. Site is 30 feet west of center of road under power line.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 40 to more than 60 inches. The soil is very strongly acid to slightly acid in the A horizon and very strongly acid to medium acid throughout the rest of the profile. Flakes of mica range from few to common in the lower part of the profile of some pedons. Mineralogy of the clay fraction is mixed.
The A or Ap horizon has hue of 10YR to 2.5Y, value of 3 to 6, and chroma of 1 to 4. Where the value is 3, the thickness of the A or Ap horizon is less than 6 inches. The E horizon, where present, has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 3 or 4. The A and E horizons are loamy sand, loamy fine sand, fine sandy loam, or sandy loam.
The Bt horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 2.5Y, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 4 to 8. Mottles of chroma 2 or less are near the top of the Bt horizon and increase with depth. Most pedons have mottles of redder hue. In some pedons the lower part of the Bt horizon is mottled in shades of red, brown, yellow, or gray. The Bt horizon is sandy clay loam, clay loam, or sandy loam. Content of silt in the particle-size control section is less than 30 percent.
The BC horizon has hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 3 to 7, and chroma of 0 to 6, commonly with mottles in shades of red, brown, yellow, or gray. In some pedons the horizon is mottled in shades of red, brown, yellow, or gray. It is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, or sandy clay loam.
The C horizon has colors similar to the BC horizon. It is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loamy sand, loamy fine sand, fine sand, or
sand. Some pedons are stratified and some pedons have pockets or strata of loamy or clayey material.
COMPETING SERIES: These are Columbus, Eunola, Mazarn, Mollicy, Pelion, Slagle, and Whitwell series in the same family and Altavista, Bertie, Johns, Tetotum, and Yemassee series in similar families. Columbus and Mollicy soils have more than 25 percent silt in the particle-size control section and are on low stream terraces subject to flooding. Eunola soils have clay mineralogy dominated by kaolinite. Mazarn soils have bedrock at 20 to 40 inches. Pelion soils have 10 to 60 percent brittleness in some subhorizon of the B and have clay mineralogy dominated by kaolinite. Slagle soils have moderately slow to slow permeability in the lower part of the B horizon and have a perched high water table. Whitwell soils have more silt in the series control section and are on low stream terraces. Altavista, Bertie, and Tetotum soils have mixed mineralogy. Johns soils have a thinner solum and contrasting particle-size textures. Yemassee soils have grayer colors in the E and upper part of the B horizon.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Yauhannah soils are on broad nearly level areas of the lower Coastal Plains. Near the type location the mean annual temperature is about 65 degrees F. Precipitation is about 51 inches, and freeze-free season is about 243 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Yemassee series, and Chisolm, Coosaw, Eddings, Eulonia, Hobcaw, Murad, Nemours, Ogeechee, Wahee, and Williman series. Chisolm and Coosaw soils are on nearby landscapes and have sandy A and E horizons 20 to 40 inches thick. Eddings and Murad soils are on nearby landscapes and have a sandy A and E horizons more than 40 inches thick. Eulonia, Nemours, and Wahee soils are on adjacent landscapes and have a clayey control section. Hobcaw, Ogeechee, and Williman soils are on lower adjacent landscapes, are more poorly drained, and have grayer colors throughout the profile.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained; slow surface runoff; moderate permeability. The water table is within 1.5 to 2.5 feet of the surface for as much as 4 months during most years.
USE AND VEGETATION: Largely cleared and used for growing corn, soybeans, small grains, cotton, tobacco, and truck crops. Forest vegetation consists of loblolly and longleaf pine intermixed with hardwoods.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Lower Coastal Plain of South Carolina. The series is of moderate extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Raleigh, North Carolina
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Georgetown County, South Carolina; 1980.
REMARKS: Yauhannah soils were formerly included in the Bertie or Eunola series. This series is limited to soils with mixed clay mineralogy.
Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon - the layer from the surface to a depth of 9 inches (the Ap horizon)
Argillic horizon - the layer from a depth of 9 to 62 inches (the Bt1, Bt2, Bt3, Bt4, and BC horizon)
