YAXING SERIES


The Yaxing series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in material weathered from sandstone mixed with loess in the upper part. Yaxing soils are on black slopes of hills that commonly have a north aspect. Slopes are 8 to 60 percent. Elevation is 1,000 to 3,200 feet. The mean annual precipitation is about 17 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 47 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Pachic Ultic Argixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Yaxing loam - under ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir on a 55 percent north-facing back slope at an elevation of 3,000 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted. All textures are apparent field textures)

A1---0 to 9 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak medium granular structure; soft, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine, fine and medium roots; few fine and medium interstitial pores; neutral (pH 7.2); gradual wavy boundary. (8 to 16 inches thick)

A2--9 to 21 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate medium granular structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine, fine, and medium roots; few fine interstitial pores; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary. (12 to 20 inches thick)

Bt--21 to 36 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) moist; weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine roots; few fine interstitial pores; few faint clay films on faces of peds; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); gradual wavy boundary. (12 to 18 inches thick)

C--36 to 60 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; massive; slightly hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine roots; few medium and coarse tubular pores; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6).

TYPE LOCATION: Chelan County, Washington; about 4 miles west of Wenatchee, Washington; l1,100 feet north and 1,640 feet west of the southeast corner of section 14, T.22N., R.19E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 48 to 50 degrees F. These soils are usually moist, but are dry in all parts of the moisture control section for 75 to 90 consecutive days following the summer solstice. The particle-size control section averages 20 to 30 percent clay. The mollic epipedon is 20 to 36 inches thick.

The A horizon has value of 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist and chroma of 2 or 3 moist and dry.

The Bt horizon has value of 5 or 6 dry, 3 to 5 moist and chroma of 3 or 4 dry, 4 or 5 moist. Texture is loam or clay loam.

The C horizon has value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist and chroma of 3 or 4 dry, 2, to 4 moist. Texture is loam or loam.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Buckeye, Campfour, Cartwright, Elmore, Hyprairie, Kiakus, Lauby, Newlig, Nisene, Paragon, Roseburg and Swalecreek series.

Buckeye soils - 20 to 40 inches to a lithic contact (greenstone)
Campfour soils - mollic epipedon 20 to 40 inches thick and includes the upper part of the argillic horizon;
hue of 2.5YR to 7.5YR in argillic horizon; dry for 80 to 100 consecutive days
Cartwright soils - slightly acid or neutral; 5 to 25 percent gravel of granite origin
Elmore soils - 40 to 60 inches to a lithic contact (rhyolite); dry for 45 to 70 consecutive days
Hyprairie soils - dry for 60 to 75 consecutive days; 60 inches or more to base of argillic horizon
Kiakus soils - 20 to 40 inches to a lithic contact (basalt)
Lauby soils - 40 to more than 60 inches to a paralithic contact; dry for 45 to 60 consecutive days
Newlig soils - dry for 60 to 75 consecutive days
Nisene soils - 40 to 60 inches to a paralithic contact (sandstone, shale); MAST of 56 to 58 degrees F.
Paragon soils - 20 to 40 inches to a paralithic contact (andesite)
Roseburg soils - MAST of 52 to 57 degrees F.; 0 to 15 percent rounded gravel in the pscs
Swalecreek soils - 60 inches or more to base of the argillic horizon; neutral or slightly acid in the argillic
horizon

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Yaxing soils are on foothills that commonly have a north aspect. Elevations are 1,000 to 3,200 feet. Slopes are 8 to 60 percent. Yaxing soils formed in material weathered from sandstone mixed with loess in the upper part. The climate is characterized by warm, dry summers, and cool, moist winters. The mean annual precipitation is 16 to 18 inches. The mean January temperature is about 24 degrees F. and mean July temperature is about 68 degrees F. The mean annual temperature is 46 to 48 degrees F The frost-free season is 110 to 150 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are The Borland, Varelum, and Yaxon soils. Borland soils are 10 to 20 inches deep to a lithic contact and are on foothills. Varelum soils have a mollic epipedon less than 20 inches thick and are on foothills. Yaxon soils have a mollic epipedon less than 20 inches thick, are dry for 90 to 105 consecutive days and are on summits and side slopes.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow to very rapid runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Timber production, grazable woodland, wildlife habitat, watershed, and recreation. Vegetation is ponderosa pine, scattered Douglas-fir, antelope bitterbrush, bluebunch wheatgrass, arrowleaf, balsamroot, Oregon-grape, and yarrow.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northeast Washington. MLRA 6. Series is of small extent.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon - the zone from 0 to 21 inches
Argillic horizon - the zone from 21 to 36 inches, with an estimated 25 percent clay
Base saturation (sum of cations) is estimated to be above 75 percent in most of the solum but less than 75 percent in some part of the upper 30 inches

Additional lab work may be needed to separate this series from Hyprairie.
