Soil moisture - The soil moisture control section is intermittently moist in some part from July to October and December to March. It is assumed to be dry in all parts 50 to 75 percent of the time (cumulative), when the soil temperature at 20 inches is 41 degrees F. or higher. The soils are driest in May and June. The soil moisture regime is aridic bordering on ustic.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Alvey, Barx, Cerrillos, Clovis, Fernando, Flaco, Horchata, Maysdorf, Millett, Palabria, Progresso, Sanostee, Scholle, Selpats, Solirec, Spenlo, Threetop, Tuweep, and Wineg. The Alvey, Barx, Cerrillos, Clovis, Maysdorf, Millett, Scholle, Selpats and Solirec soils are very deep to bedrock. The Fernando, Palaria, and Wineg soils are deep to bedrock. The Flaco and Tuweep soils are formed in volcanic parent material. The Horchata, Progresso, Sanostee, Spenlo, and Threetop soils are moderately deep to sedimentary rock.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Cabreros soils are located on toeslopes of structural benches on sills at elevations from 6,000 to 7,000 feet and slopes of 2 to 6 percent. They formed in slope alluvium and eolian material derived from monzonite. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 10 to 13 inches with about 45 percent falling as rain from high-intensity convective thunderstorms between July and September. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 50 to 52 degrees F with a frost-free period of about 150 to 170 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Hagerman and Kech series found on adjacent upland areas, neither of which have calcic horizons. In addition, Kech soils are shallow to sedimentary bedrock.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability is moderately slow. Runoff is negligible to moderate.
USE AND VEGETATION: Dominant use is for rangeland. The historic climax vegetation is blue grama, galleta, oak, black grama, and oneseed juniper. The ecological site is Hills(R036XB124NM).
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Cabreros soils are of small extent on the Galisteo Basin part of the Mexican Highland section of the Basin and Range province in northcentral New Mexico. The MLRA is 36.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Bozeman, Montana.
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Santa Fe County (Santa Fe Area), New Mexico, 2008. The name Cabreros is taken from a mesa near the type location.
