TYPICAL PEDON: Nevarc silt loam - forested, on a 15 percent concave slope. (Colors are for moist soil.)
A--0 to 3 inches; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) silt loam; weak fine granular structure; friable; many fine and medium roots; extremely acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 8 inches thick)
E--3 to 14 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam; common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) Fe masses; weak fine granular structure; many fine and medium roots; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 16 inches thick)
Bt1--14 to 19 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) clay loam; common medium faint strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) Fe masses; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; many fine and medium roots; many faint clay films on faces of peds; extremely acid; gradual smooth boundary.
Bt2--19 to 26 inches; strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) clay; common medium distinct red (2.5YR 4/6) and and brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) Fe masses, and common medium distinct pinkish gray (7.5YR 7/2) Fe depletions; weak medium prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky; firm; common fine roots; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary.
Bt3--26 to 42 inches; strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) clay; many medium distinct red (2.5YR 4/6) and brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) Fe masses and pinkish gray (7.5YR 7/2) Fe depletions; weak medium prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky; very firm; few fine roots; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon is 20 to 50 inches)
Cg--42 to 51 inches; pinkish gray (7.5YR 7/2) clay with pockets of sandy clay; common medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) and red (2.5YR 4/6) Fe masses; massive; firm; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.
C--51 to 64 inches; strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) sandy clay loam with pockets of clay; common medium faint yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) Fe masses and light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) Fe depletions; massive; firm; very strongly acid.
TYPE LOCATION: Middlesex County, Virginia; about 1.5 miles east of VA-640 on VA-693; .5 mile north of VA-693 on farm lane and 250 feet south of Weeks Creek.

Rock Fragment content: Quartz gravel range from 0 to 15 percent throughout the solum and 0 to 35 percent in the substratum
Soil Reaction: extremely acid through moderately acid, except where limed
Other Features: Linear extensibility is estimated to be less than 6.0 cm between the soil surface to a depth of 40 cm

REMARKS: 1. In the past Nevarc soils have been included with higher units of taxonomic classification. 2. Nevarc soils have also been part of the Craven soils concept in the past.
Diagnostic horizons and soil characteristics recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon--the zone from 0 to 14 inches (A and E horizons)
Argillic horizon--the zone from 14 to 42 inches (Bt horizons)
Aquic conditions--the soil has redox depletions and concentrations within the upper 24 inches of the argillic horizon, with periodic saturation and reduction at some time during the year
Series control section--the zone from 0 to 60 inches
