SINGATSE SERIES


The Singatse series consist of very shallow, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in residuum and colluvium derived mainly from volcanic rocks. Singatse soils are on hills and mountains. Slopes are 8 to 75 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 150 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 10 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, calcareous, mesic Lithic Torriorthents

TYPICAL PEDON: Singatse very gravelly sandy loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) The surface is covered with about 65 percent gravel.

A--0 to 5 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very gravelly sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; fine and very fine interstitial and vesicular pores; 45 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 13 cm thick)

C--5 to 15 cm; brown (7.5YR 5/4) very gravelly sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine, and many very fine roots; few fine and many very fine interstitial pores; 55 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.8); abrupt wavy boundary. (10 to 25 cm thick)

R--15 cm; andesite; fractured in the upper 15 cm.

TYPE LOCATION: Mineral County, Nevada; on the Walker River Indian Reservation; about 2,520 feet north and 1,090 feet east of the southwest corner of section 27, T. 14 N., R. 30 E.; USGS Red Ridge 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; latitude 39 degrees 2 minutes 49.7 seconds N and longitude 118 degrees 37 minutes 20.6 seconds W; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 39.0471944 latitude, -118.6216667 longitude.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Usually dry, moist for short periods in winter and spring, dry in early May through October; typic aridic soil moisture regime.
Mean annual soil temperature: 9 to 12 degrees C.
Depth to bedrock: 10 to 25 cm to a lithic contact.
Reaction: Moderately alkaline or strongly alkaline.
Effervescence: Slightly effervescent or strongly effervescent.
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 1 to 10 percent.
Other features: 3 to 8 cm thick sandy clay loam which is too thin to qualify as an argillic horizon is in some pedons.

Particle-size control section - Clay content: 5 to 15 percent.
Rock fragments: 35 to 60 percent, mainly gravel. Lithology of fragments is dominantly volcanic rocks such as rhyolite, andesite, dacite, or tuff.

A horizon
Hue: 10YR or 2.5Y.
Value: 6 or 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 or 3, dry or moist.

C horizon
Hue: 10YR, 7.5YR or 2.5Y.
Value: 6 or 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 or 3, dry or moist.
Texture: Very gravelly loam or very gravelly sandy loam.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Berzatic, Blacktop, Cadrina, Pintwater, Sojur, and Tsaya series.

Berzatic soils have 15 to 35 percent calcium carbonate equivalent in the particle-size control section. Blacktop soils are intermittently moist in the upper part of the moisture control section for about 10 days cumulative in the period June through September by convection storms. Cadrina soils have fragments of sandstone or shale in the particle-size control section and are intermittently moist in the moisture control section during summer months. Pintwater soils have horizons with identifiable secondary carbonates. Sojur soils have 18 to 25 percent clay in the particle-size control section and are dominated by channers. Tsaya soils have hue of 2.5YR through 7.5YR and are dominated by channers of sedimentary rock.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Singatse soils are on hills and mountains. They formed in residuum and colluvium derived mainly from volcanic rocks. Slopes are 8 to 75 percent. Elevations range from 1220 to 1980 meters. The climate is arid with cool, moist winters and hot, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 100 to 200 mm, the mean annual temperature is 9 to 12 degrees C, and the frost-free period is 100 to 130 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Lapon, Theon, and Whirlo soils. Lapon soils are loamy-skeletal, very shallow and shallow to indurated duripans, and have argillic horizons. Theon soils are loamy-skeletal, very shallow and shallow to lithic contacts, and have argillic horizons. Whirlo soils are loamy-skeletal, very deep, and have cambic horizons.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Somewhat excessively drained; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.

USE AND VEGETATION: Singatse soils are used for rangeland and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly a sparse cover of shadscale, bud sagebrush, Bailey greasewood, and littleleaf horsebrush.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Western Nevada. These soils are extensive with about 219,000 acres of the series mapped to date. MLRA 27.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon - The zone from the soil surface to 15 cm (A and C horizons).
Lithic contact - The boundary at 15 cm to underlying hard bedrock (R layer).
Particle-size control section - The zone from the soil surface to 15 cm (A and C horizons).

The type location was moved in 03/2009 to better reflect the series concept and is in the vicinity of the lab pedon.
