TYPE LOCATION: Roseau County, Minnesota; 2 1/2 miles south of Salol; 400 feet west and 2,300 feet south of northeast corner of Sec. 29, T. 162 N., R. 38 W.; USGS Salol quadrangle, lat. 48 degrees 49 minutes 19 seconds N., long. 95 degrees, 34 minutes, 19 seconds W., NAD27.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the mollic epipedon ranges from 7 to 20 inches. Depth to free carbonates is 10 inches or less. The clayey mantle is 15 to 40 inches thick. The clayey mantle has 2 to 10 percent rock fragments, where it is formed in till and no rock fragments where it is formed in glacial lacustrine sediments. The underlying loamy glacial till has 2 to 10 percent of rock fragments. These fragments have mixed lithology.
TheA horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2 or 3, chroma of 1 or 2, or is N 2/0. Texture is clay loam, silty clay, clay or silty clay loam. Reaction is neutral or slightly alkaline.
The Bg horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 5Y, value of 2 to 5, and chroma of 0 to 2 or is N 2/0. It typically has few through many, faint through prominent redoximorphic features. Texture is clay, silty clay, or silty clay loam. Reaction is neutral to moderately alkaline.
The 2Bkg, 2BCkg, 2CBkg or 2Cg horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 5Y, value of 4 or 6, and chroma of 1 or 2. It has distinct or prominent redoximorphic features throughout. It is slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline.
The 2Bkg, 2BCkg, 2CBkg or 2Cg horizon in the Percy till phase has textures of sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loam or silt loam. It has 12 to 18 percent clay and more than 15 percent fine sand and coarser sand. Calcium carbonate equivalent ranges from 20 to 40 percent. Moist bulk density ranges from 1.75 to 2.00 g/cc.
The 2Bkg, 2BCkg, 2CBkg or 2Cg horizon in the Des Moines till phase has textures of loam, clay loam or silty clay loam. It has 18 to 35 percent clay and more than 15 percent fine sand and coarser sand. Calcium carbonate equivalent ranges from 10 to 25 percent. Moist bulk density ranges from 1.35 to 1.60 g/cc.
COMPETING SERIES: No other series in this family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Boash soils have plane or slightly concave slopes with gradient of 0 to 2 percent on glacial lake plains. They formed in a mantle of clayey lacustrine sediments or clayey glacial till over calcareous loamy glacial till. These sediments are of Late Wisconsinan Age. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 36 to 45 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 19 to 24 inches. The frost-free days range from 110 to 135. Elevation above sea level ranges from 750 to 1,250 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Clearwater, Doran, Grano, Percy, Reiner, and Roliss soils. Clearwater and Grano soils are fine throughout the control section. Doran and Reiner are better drained, are on higher-lying positions, and have argillic horizons. Percy and Roliss soils are loamy throughout the control section.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. Runoff is low or very low. Permeability is slow in the clayey material and moderate or moderately slow in the underlying material. Depth to seasonal high saturation is as high as the surface at some time from April through June in normal years.
USE AND VEGETATION: Commonly cropped to small grains, sunflowers, and hay. Native vegetation is tall grass prairie with scattered areas of oaks and aspen.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwest Minnesota. This series is not extensive.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Pennington County, Minnesota, 1981.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: mollic epipedon - the zone from the surface to a depth of 17 inches (Ap and Bg1 horizons); aquic moisture regime; calcareous family based on carbonates in all parts between depths of 10 to 20 inches; contrasting particle size with a textural change at 29 inches (Bg2 to 2Cg1), Vertic subgroup based on 6 cm or more COLE in the upper 40 inches.
In the past this soil was included within the concept of Fargo or Viking soils.
