CANTEY SERIES

The Cantey series consist of very deep, poorly drained, slowly permeable soils that formed on old marine terraces in the coastal plain. The soils are saturated in the winter and early spring. Water runs off the surface very slowly. Slopes are less than 2 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Albaquults

TYPICAL PEDON: Cantey loam--forested.
(Colors are for moist soil.)

A--0 to 6 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) loam; few fine faint pale brown (10YR 6/3) and dark brown (10YR 4/3) mottles; moderate medium granular structure; friable; many fine and medium roots; strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (4 to 9 inches thick)

Btg1--6 to 18 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) clay; common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) and few fine prominent yellowish red (5YR 5/8) mottles; moderate medium angular and subangular blocky structure; firm, plastic; slightly sticky; many prominent clay films on faces of peds and in root channels; common fine and medium roots; few fine pores; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Btg2--18 to 35 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) clay; common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/8), few medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/8), and few fine prominent red (2.5YR 4/8) mottles; moderate medium angular and subangular blocky structure; very firm, plastic; slightly sticky; many prominent clay films on faces of peds; few fine roots and pores; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Btg3--35 to 52 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) clay; common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) and yellowish red (5YR 4/8), and few fine prominent red (2.5YR 4/8) mottles; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very firm, plastic; slightly sticky; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; few fine roots and pores; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (The Btg horizon is 30 to more than 60 inches thick)

BCg--52 to 72 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) clay; common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) and few fine distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) mottles; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; very firm, plastic; very strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Clarendon County, South Carolina; 17 miles southwest of Manning; from St. Paul go south on South Carolina Secondary Highway 373 for 2 miles; turn right (southwest) on dirt road and go 2.5 miles; site is 400 feet east of road.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness is 60 to more than 80 inches. The soil is extremely acid to slightly acid in the A horizon and extremely acid to strongly acid throughout the rest of the profile.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR to 5Y or neutral, value of 2 to 4, and chroma of 0 to 2. It is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, very fine sandy loam, loam, or silt loam.

The E horizon, where present, has hue of 10YR, 2.5Y, or neutral, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 0 to 2. It is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, very fine sandy loam, loam, or silt loam.

The Btg horizon has hue of 10YR to 5Y or neutral, value of 4 to 7 and chroma of 0 to 2. Most pedons have few to many mottles in shades of red, brown, or yellow throughout the Btg horizon. The Btg horizon is sandy clay, silty clay, or clay. It is firm or very firm and plastic or very plastic.

The BCg horizon has colors similar to the Btg horizon. It is sandy clay loam, clay loam, silty clay loam, silty clay, sandy clay, or clay.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other known series in the same family. Similar series in other families are the Bladen, Coxville, Grady, and Leaf series. Bladen and Leaf soils have mixed mineralogy. Coxville and Grady soils do not have an abrupt textural change between the A and B horizons.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils are on low areas of terraces in the Coastal Plain. Slope gradients are less than 2 percent. The soil formed in unconsolidated sediments, dominantly of fine texture. The mean annual temperature ranges from 62 to 66 degrees F., mean annual precipitation ranges from 42 to 50 inches, and frost-free season ranges from 200 to 250 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Orangeburg, Persanti, Red Bay, Smithboro, Summerton, and Wahee series. Orangeburg, Red Bay, and Summerton soils are well drained, and have a reddish Bt horizon. Persanti soils are moderately well drained and have a yellowish brown Bt horizon with chroma 2 or less mottles within 30 inches. Wahee and Smithboro soils are somewhat poorly drained and are dominantly yellowish brown, yellow, or yellowish red in the upper part of the Bt horizon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained; very slow runoff; slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most of this soil is in forest of water oak, sweetgum, blackgum, maple, cypress, and a few scattered pines. Where drained, this soil is used to grow corn, soybeans, and pasture grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Coastal Plains of South Carolina and Virginia. The series is of moderate extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Raleigh, North Carolina

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Clarendon County, South Carolina; l972.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to 6 inches (A horizon)

Argillic horizon - the zone from 6 to 52 inches (Btg1, Btg2 and Btg3 horizons)

Aquic moisture regime

Abrupt textural change - clay content doubles from the cambic horizon to the argillic horizon (from 17% to 53%) in less than 3 inches
