SUMMERTON SERIES

The Summerton series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils that formed in thick sediments on old stream terraces in the Coastal Plain. Slopes range from 0 to 12 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Paleudults

TYPICAL PEDON: Summerton fine sandy loam--cultivated. (Colors are for moist soil.)

Ap--0 to 8 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) fine sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable; common fine roots; slightly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)

Bt1--8 to 17 inches; red (2.5YR 4/6) clay; common fine and medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/8), and few medium faint yellowish red (5YR 4/8) mottles; strong medium subangular blocky structure; few fine roots and pores; firm; many distinct clay films on faces of peds; few fine flakes of mica; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (8 to 20 inches thick)

Bt2--17 to 48 inches; red (2.5YR 4/6) clay; common fine and medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) mottles; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; few fine roots; few fine pores; firm; many distinct clay films on faces of peds; few fine flakes of mica; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (20 to 32 inches thick)

Bt3--48 to 72 inches; red (2.5YR 4/8) clay; many fine and medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) mottles; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; few fine roots; few fine pores; few distinct clay films on faces of peds; many fine flakes of mica; very strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Clarendon County, South Carolina; 16 miles southwest of Manning; 50 feet west of South Carolina Secondary Highway 257; 2 miles southwest of St. Paul.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness is 60 to more than 80 inches. The soil is very strongly acid to slightly acid in the A horizon and extremely acid to strongly acid in the rest of the profile. Some pedons have a few flakes of mica in the upper part of the B horizon and few to many flakes of mica in the lower part.

The A or Ap horizon has hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 3 to 6, and chroma of 2 to 4. A or Ap horizons with value of less than 3.5 are less than 6 inches thick. Some pedons have a thin Ap horizon with hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5, and chroma of 4 to 8. The A horizon is very fine sandy loam, fine sandy loam, sandy loam, loamy fine sand, or loamy sand.

The E horizon, where present, has hue of 5YR to 2.5Y, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 4 or 6. The E horizon is very fine sandy loam, fine sandy loam, sandy loam, loamy fine sand, or loamy sand.

The AB horizon, where present, has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 4to 6, and chroma of 6 or 8. It is clay loam or sandy clay loam.

The upper part of the Bt horizon of most pedons has hue of 10R to 5YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 6 or 8, with few to common mottles in shades of yellow or brown. Some pedons have hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5, and chroma of 6 or 8, with few to common mottles in shades of red.

The lower part of the Bt horizon has hue of 10R to 5YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 6 or 8 with common to many mottles in shades of yellow or brown; or it is mottled in shades of red, yellow, or brown. Some pedons have mottles of chroma 2 or less in the lower part of the Bt horizon. The Bt horizon is firm or very firm, hard, or very hard. It is clay, sandy clay, or clay loam.

The BC horizon, where present, is mottled in shades of red, brown, yellow, or gray, or it has hue of 10R to 5YR, value of 4, and chroma of 6 or 8 with mottles in shades of brown, yellow, or gray. It is clay, sandy clay, clay loam, or sandy clay loam.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Dewey, Fullerton, Henderson, Lugoff, Marlboro, and Waynesboro series in the same family and the Caroline, Collegedale, Shubuta, Tiak, and Turbeville series. Dewey soils are underlain by limestone and have a higher component of silt throughout. Fullerton and Henderson soils have coarse fragments of chert throughout the profile. Lugoff soils have hue of 7.5YR or yellower and more than 15 percent rock fragments in the upper Bt horizon. Marlboro and Waynesboro soils have uniform colors in the upper part of the Bt horizon. Caroline, Collegedale, Shubuta, Tiak, and Turbeville series are similar soils in other families and have mixed mineralogy.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils are on old stream terraces in the Coastal Plain. Slopes range from 0 to 12 percent. The soil formed in unconsolidated, dominantly fine textured, Coastal Plain sediments. The mean annual temperature ranges from 59 to 66 degrees F., the mean annual precipitation ranges from 38 to 50 inches, and the frost-free season ranges from 200 to 240 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Cantey, Coxville, Dunbar, Duplin, Orangeburg, Persanti, Red Bay, and Smithboro series. Cantey, Coxville, Dunbar, Duplin, Persanti, and Smithboro soils are wetter and are mottled or have dominant chroma of 2 or less between the base of the A or Ap horizon and 30 inches. Orangeburg and Red Bay soils have a fine-loamy particle-size control section.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most of the soil has been cleared and is used for growing corn, soybeans, cotton, small grain, and pasture and hay grasses. Forested areas are mixed pines and hardwoods.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Coastal Plain of South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. The series is of moderate extent.
