TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, semiactive, thermic Typic Umbraquults
TYPICAL PEDON: Deloss fine sandy loam--forested. (Colors are for moist soil)
Ap--0 to 10 inches; black (N 2/0) loam; weak fine granular structure; friable; strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (10 to 16 inches thick)
Eg--10 to 13 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loamy sand; weak medium granular structure; friable; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 9 inches thick)
Btg1--13 to 24 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) sandy clay loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; common fine flakes of mica; few medium pockets of sandy loam material; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.
Btg2--24 to 38 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) sandy clay loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly sticky; common medium roots; few fine prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) soft masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.
Btg3--38 to 48 inches; light gray (5Y 6/1) sandy clay loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly sticky; few medium pockets of sandy loam material; common fine flakes of mica; common medium roots; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Btg horizon is 30 to 50 inches.)
Cg--48 to 72 inches; gray (5Y 5/1) sandy loam; massive; friable; many fine flakes of mica; common soft mineral grains; very strongly acid.
TYPE LOCATION: Hoke County, North Carolina, 2 miles south of Fayetteville on NC 87, 0.3 mile west on East Mountain Drive, l50 feet south of road.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Solum Thickness: 40 to 60 inches
Depth to Bedrock: Greater than 60 inches
Depth to Seasonal High Water Table: 0 to 12, November to April
Soil Reaction: A horizon is very strongly acid to slightly acid. The B horizon is very strongly acid or strongly acid in the upper part and is very strongly acid to slightly acid in the lower part. The C horizon is extremely acid to neutral

Color--hue of 10YR to 5Y or is neutral, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 0 to 2
Texture--loam, fine sandy loam, sandy loam, loamy sand, or loamy fine sand or their mucky analogues

Dominant Vegetation: Where wooded--swamp blackgum, sweetgum, water tupelo, cypress, water, and willow oaks, and an undergrowth of bay bushes, myrtle, and gallberry. Where cultivated--corn, oats, soybeans, small grain, truck crops, and pasture.

Distribution: Lower Coastal Plain of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and possibly Florida and Georgia
