DUMAS SERIES


The Dumas series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in loamy eolian sediments of Pleistocene age. These soils are on nearly level to gently sloping plains of the Southern High Plains, Northern part (MLRA 77A). Slope ranges from 0 to 5 percent. Mean annual temperature is 13 degrees C (55 degrees F), and mean annual precipitation is about 460 mm (18 in).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Aridic Paleustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Dumas loam--on a 0.5 percent slope in rangeland at an elevation of 1053 m (3455 ft). (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 18 cm (0 to 7 in); brown (10YR 5/3) loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine granular structure; hard, friable; few very fine pores; noneffervescent; neutral, pH 7.0; abrupt smooth boundary. (Thickness of the A or Ap horizon(s) is 15 to 30 cm [6 to 12 in])

Bt1--18 to 38 cm (7 to 15 in); brown (10YR 4/3) clay loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate fine and very fine subangular blocky; hard, friable; common medium and fine pores; few wormcasts; few distinct clay films on ped surfaces; noneffervescent; neutral, pH 7.2; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt2--38 to 56 cm (15 to 22 in); brown (7.5YR 4/4) clay loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) moist; moderate coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium and fine subangular blocky; very hard, firm; few fine pores; few distinct clay films on ped surfaces; noneffervescent; neutral, pH 7.3; clear wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon is 15 to 71 cm [6 to 28 in])

Btk1--56 to 86 cm (22 to 34 in); yellowish red (5YR 5/6) clay loam, yellowish red (5YR 4/6) moist; moderate coarse prismatic parting to moderate medium and fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; few distinct clay films on ped surfaces; few distinct carbonate coats on ped surfaces; few very fine threadlike and irregular carbonate masses and concretions; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline, pH 7.8; clear wavy boundary.

Btk2--86 to 114 cm (34 to 45 in); reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) clay loam, strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) moist; moderate coarse prismatic parting to moderate fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; few distinct clay films on ped surfaces; common distinct carbonate coats on ped surfaces; common fine threadlike and irregular carbonate masses and concretions; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline, pH 8.2; gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Btk horizon is 38 to 114 cm [15 to 45 in])

Bk1--114 to 170 cm (45 to 67 in); light brown (7.5YR 6/4) clay loam, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; hard; friable; common fine pores; mane fine and medium threadlike and irregular carbonate masses and concretions; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline, pH 8.2; gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bk horizons 69 to 135 cm [27 to 53 in])

Bk2--170 to 203 cm (67 to 80 in); reddish yellow (7.5YR 7/6) clay loam, strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; many medium and fine pores; common fine and medium threadlike and irregular carbonate masses and concretions; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline, pH 8.2.

TYPE LOCATION: Sherman County, Texas; from the intersection of East St. and Highway 95 (Texas Street)on the east side of Texhoma, 1.5 miles east on Highway 95, then 1.6 miles south on Farm to Market Road 1290; 30 ft (9m) east into pasture.

Soil moisture: An ustic moisture regime bordering on aridic. The soil moisture control section is dry in some or all parts for more than 180 but less than 205 days, cumulative, in normal years. July through August and December through February are the driest months. These soils are intermittently moist in September through November and March through June.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Conlen, Dalhart, Dallam, Gruver, Hansford, Knoblaw, Lautz, Oslo, Perico, Perryton, Plack, Rickmore, Sherm, Sunray, and Texline soils.
Conlen soils: occur in lower positions and have carbonatic mineralogy
Gruver, Perryton, and Sherm soils: occur on similar positions, and have greater than 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section
Oslo soils: occur on similar positions, and have a fine-silty particle-size class
Texline soils: occur on similar positions, and have a calcic horizon within 40 to 76 cm (16 to 30 in) of the soil surface
Dalhart and Dallam soils: occur on slightly higher positions and have an ochric epipedon
Hansford, Knoblaw, and Lautz soils: occur in lower playa positions and have greater than 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section
Perico and Rickmore soils: occur on similar positions and have an ochric epipedon
Plack soils: occur in lower positions and have a petrocalcic horizon within 50 cm (20 in) of the soil surface
Sunray soils: are on similar positions and have a calcic horizon within 60 cm (24 in) of the soil surface

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage class: well drained
Permeability: moderate
Runoff: negligible on slopes less than 1 percent, low on 1 to 3 percent slopes, and medium on 3 to 5 percent slopes.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are mainly cultivated with corn, soybeans, grain sorghum, and winter wheat. A considerable amount of acreage is irrigated. Climax vegetation is dominantly short grasses with a few mid-grasses, including blue grama and buffalograss, with lesser amounts of vine-mesquite, western wheatgrass, sideoats grama, galleta, or tobosa, silver bluestem, wild alfalfa, and prairie clover.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: LRR-H; Southern High Plains, Northern Part (MLRA 77A) of the Texas Panhandle. The soil is also correlated outside MLRA 77A in portions of eastern New Mexico. This soil is extensive.
