GARVIN SERIES

The Garvin series consists of deep, moderately well drained, very slowly permeable soils. These level to very gently sloping soils formed in loamy and clayey alluvium sediments of Pleistocene age. These soils occur on narrow to broad nearly level alluvial plains in the Grand Prairie (MLRA 85), and the Central Rolling Red Prairies (MLRA 80A). Slope ranges from 0 to 1 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 17.2 degrees C (63 degrees F), and mean annual precipitation is about 940 mm (37 in).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, thermic Udertic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Garvin silty clay loam-cultivated, at an elevation of 313 m (1026 ft). (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

(Thickness of the A horizon is 38 to 114 cm [15 to 45 in])

Btknss--81 to 165 cm (32 to 65 in); reddish brown (5YR 5/3) clay loam; reddish brown (5YR 4/3) moist; weak medium blocky structure; very hard, very firm; few fine roots; few fine pores; few shiny pressure faces on peds; few slickensides that do not intersect; common vertical cracks filled with black (10YR 2/1) silty clay; 5 percent by volume of fine soft bodies and concretions of calcium carbonate; exchangeable sodium percent is 28; calcareous; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (Thickness of the Bk horizon is 36 to 89 cm [14 to 35 in])

BCkn--165 to 188 cm (65 to 74 in); dark reddish gray (5YR 4/2) clay; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) moist; massive; very hard, very firm; few fine roots; few fine pores; 5 percent by volume of fine and medium soft bodies and concretions of calcium carbonate; exchangeable sodium percent is 27; calcareous; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline.
