TYPICAL PEDON: GERTIE silt loam - on a 0 percent slope in an open crop field. (Colors are for moist soil.)

Ap--0 to 4 inches; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) silt loam; moderate medium granular structure; friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary.

E--4 to 9 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) silt loam; moderate fine granular structure; friable, slightly sticky, nonplastic; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.

Btg1--9 to 16 inches; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) silty clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm, slightly sticky, very plastic; few distinct clay films on faces of peds; many fine strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.

Btg2--16 to 27 inches; dark gray (2.5Y 4/1) silty clay; strong coarse subangular blocky structure; firm, slightly sticky, very plastic; few distinct clay films on faces of peds; common medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.

Btg3--27 to 41 inches; gray (2.5Y 5/1) silty clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm, slightly sticky, very plastic; few medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) and many medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; few distinct clay films on faces of peds; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.

2C--41 to 64 inches; light yellowish brown (2.5Y 6/4) loamy sand; loose; single grain; nonsticky, nonplastic; few fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation, and common medium prominent light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) iron depletions; very strongly acid; clear wavy boundary.

2Cg--64 to 72 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) loamy sand; loose; single grain; nonsticky, nonplastic; many coarse prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Chesapeake, Virginia; from the intersection of Cornland Road and West Road, travel north on West Road for approximately 1.3 miles, then go approximately 1050 feet west. Located at 36 degrees 39 minutes 30 seconds North, 76 degrees 20 minutes 8 seconds West.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Depth to Seasonal High Water Table: 0 to 12, November to May
Soil Reaction: Extremely acid to strongly acid in the solum unless limed, and extremely acid to slightly acid in the C, Cg, 2C or 2Cg horizon
Other Features: particle-size control section has more than 30 percent silt; flakes of mica range from none to common; quartz gravels make up 0 to 10 percent of the solum and 0 to 50 percent of the C horizon

Color--hue of 10YR to 5Y, value of 2 to 6, and chroma of 1 or 2; where value is 2 or 3 it is less than 6 inches thick
Texture--fine sandy loam, sandy loam, loam, silt loam, clay loam, or silty clay loam

Color--hue of 10YR to 5Y, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 1 or 2

Color--hue of 10YR to 5Y or is neutral, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 1 or 2
Texture--ranging from sand to clay in the fine-earth fraction

COMPETING SERIES:

Portsmouth soils--very poorly drained soils (seasonal high water table 0 to 12 inches) in fine-loamy family on similar landscapes
Tetotum soils--moderately well drained soils (seasonal high water table 18 to 30 inches) in fine-loamy family on higher landscapes

Major Uses: Cropland and woodland
Dominant Vegetation: Where wooded--red maple, sweetgum, black gum, sycamore, willow oak, white oak, river birch, yellow-poplar, bald cypress, water tupelo and scattered loblolly pine. Where cultivated--corn, soybeans, small grain, and pasture.

REMARKS: This series was established to replace Roanoke on the Coastal Plain in MLRA's 153A and 153B. The April 2006 revision removed MLRA 133A and 153C from the OSED.
Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
a. Ochric epipedon - the zone from 0 to 9 inches (Ap horizon)
b. Argillic horizon - the zone from 9 to 41 inches (Btg horizon)
