POOLER SERIES

The Pooler series consists of very deep, poorly drained, slowly permeable soils that formed in beds of marine sediments, dominantly sandy clays and clay, on flats and in depressions of the lower Coastal Plain. Slopes are 0 to 2 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, semiactive, thermic Typic Endoaquults

TYPICAL PEDON: Pooler fine sandy loam - forested. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 6 inches; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) fine sandy loam; moderate fine granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (4 to 7 inches thick)

Btg1--6 to 12 inches; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) sandy clay loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine and medium roots; few distinct clay films on faces of peds; common fine manganese concretions; common medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; clear wavy boundary.

Btg2--12 to 17 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) clay; strong coarse subangular blocky structure parting to strong very fine angular blocky; very firm; few fine and medium roots; many prominent clay films on faces of peds; common fine manganese concretions; common medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.

Btg3--17 to 36 inches; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) clay; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very firm; few fine and medium roots; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; common fine manganese concretions; common medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.

Btg4--36 to 50 inches; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) clay; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very firm; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; common medium distinct light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.

Btg5--50 to 57 inches, light olive gray (5Y 6/2) sandy clay; moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; firm; few distinct clay films on faces of peds; many coarse prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Btg horizons is 50 inches or more)

BCg--57 to 75 inches, light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) sandy clay loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few faint clay films on faces of peds; common medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. ( 0 to 20 inches thick)

Cg--75 to 80 inches, light olive gray (5Y 6/2) sandy clay loam; massive; friable; common medium prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Chatham County, Georgia; 2.2 miles south of Effingham County line on Georgia Highway 21; 0.5 mile west on dirt road; 40 feet south of road, in power line right of way. (Port Wentworth, GA. USGS Quadrangle, lat. 32 degrees, 12 minutes, 27 seconds N, and long. 81 degrees, 12 minutes, 36 seconds W.)

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness is more than 60 inches. Reaction ranges from strongly acid to extremely acid. Some pedons have few to many fine manganese concretions throughout.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 2 through 4, and chroma of 1 or 2; or it is neutral with value of 2 or 3. It is fine sandy loam, loam or clay loam.

The Eg horizon, where present, has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 4 through 6, and chroma of 1 or 2. It is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loam, or clay loam.

The Btg horizons have hue of 10YR, 2.5Y, or 5Y; value of 4 through 6; and chroma of 1 or 2; or it is neutral with value of 4 through 6. Masses of iron accumulation in shades of red, brown, and yellow and depletions, are common to many. In some pedons, the lower Btg horizons are mottled in the same colors as above. The Btg1 horizon is sandy clay loam, sandy clay, or clay loam. The Btg2, Btg3, and Btg4 horizons are clay or sandy clay. The Btg5 horizon is sandy clay loam or sandy clay. The control section has 35 to 50 percent clay and less than 30 percent silt.

Some pedons have a BCg horizon with colors similar to the Btg horizon or it may be mottled in shades of red, brown, yellow and gray. Texture is sandy clay loam or sandy loam.

The Cg horizon, where present, has colors that are the same as in the Btg horizon or it is mottled in shades of red, brown, yellow, and gray. It is sand, loamy sand, sandy loam, or sandy clay loam, and is often stratified.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Chickahominy, Roanoke, and Worsham series of the same family and the Bladen, Coxville, Grady, Leaf, Lenoir, Lumbee, Meggett, Ogeechee, Rembert, and Wahee series of closely related families. Bladen, Leaf, and Meggett soils have an abrupt textural change between the A and B horizons. In addition, the Meggett soils have base saturation of more than 35 percent in the B horizon. Chickahominy soils have more than 30 percent silt in the control section. Coxville and Grady soils have kaolinitic mineralogy. Lenoir and Wahee soils are somewhat poorly drained. Lumbee soils have less clay and sola less than 40 inches thick. Ogeechee soils are less clayey. Rembert, Roanoke, and Worsham soils have a sola less than 60 inches thick and Rembert soils have kaolinitic mineralogy.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Pooler soils are on nearly level flats and in slight depressions of the lower Coastal Plain . Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Elevation is 15 to 100 feet. The mean annual temperature is 60 to 70 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is 45 to 55 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: In addition to the competing Meggett, Ogeechee, and Wahee series, these include the Cape Fear, Craven, Portsmouth, Riceboro, Slagle, and Yemassee series. Craven soils are moderately well drained and have brown B horizons. The Cape Fear and Portsmouth soils have umbric epipedons. Riceboro soils are arenic. Slagle and Yemassee soils are siliceous.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained; slow runoff; slow permeability. Depth to seasonal high water table is 0 to 1.0 foot. Some areas are ponded.

USE AND VEGETATION: Cleared and drained areas are cropped to soybeans, corn, and pasture. Slash pine, loblolly pine, longleaf pine, sweetgum, blackgum, white oak, water oak, and post oak are the principal trees in forested areas. The undergrowth is largely wax myrtle, gallberry, and scattered palmetto and a ground cover of wiregrass and sawgrass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Lower Coastal Plain of Georgia, Florida, Virginia and possibly Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina. These soils are moderately extensive.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Raleigh, North Carolina

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Chatham County, Georgia, 1969.

REMARKS: The type location was visited in 8/93 and profile redescribed to 80 inches to answer endo vs epi saturation question. Diagnostic horizons recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon - the zone from the surface to approximately 6 inches (A horizon).

Argillic horizon - the zone from approximately 6 to 75 inches (Btg1, Btg2, Btg3, Btg4, Btg5, and BCg horizons).
