HALLSUMMIT SERIES
The Hallsummit series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils that formed in thick loamy and clayey sediments on Tertiary-aged Coastal Plains. These soils are on broad sloping interfluves. Slope is dominantly 1 to 8 but ranges up to 12 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 1,318 mm (52 in) and mean annual air temperature is about 18 degrees C (65 degrees F).
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, semiactive, thermic Ultic Hapludalfs
TYPICAL PEDON: Hallsummit fine sandy loam, on a convex 3 percent slope, in pine and mixed hardwood woodland; elevation is 111.5 m (366 ft) (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted.)
A--0 to 6 cm (0 to 2 in); brown (10YR 4/3) fine sandy loam; weak fine and medium granular structure; very friable; many fine and medium roots; many fine pores; many fragments of ironstone up to 1 cm long; moderately acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (Thickness is 6 to 20 cm [2 to 8 in])
E--6 to 18 cm (2 to 7 in); brown (7.5YR 5/3) fine sandy loam; weak fine and medium granular structure; very friable; common fine roots; few fine pores and wormcasts; many fragments of ironstone up to 1 cm long; moderately acid; clear wavy boundary. (Thickness is 7 to 49 cm [3 to 19 in])
Bt--18 to 28 cm (7 to 11 in); red (2.5YR 4/6) sandy clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; few fine and medium roots; few fine pores; many fragments of ironstone up to 1 cm long; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.
Bt--28 to 94 cm (11 to 37 in); red (2.5YR 4/6) clay; common medium and coarse yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) mottles on exteriors of peds; strong medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; many fine pores; few medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) redox concentrations; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.
Bt3--94 to 164 cm (37 to 65 in); red (2.5YR 4/6) sandy clay loam; weak coarse prismatic structure parting to strong medium and coarse subangular blocky; firm and slightly brittle; pale brown coatings on vertical faces of peds; few fine and medium roots; common fine pores; few medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) redox concentrations; few medium prominent pale brown (10YR 6/3) redox depletions ;common distinct clay films on faces of peds; pockets of yellowish-brown sandy loam; many sand grains are black; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon is 129 to 151 cm [51 to 60 in])
BtC--164 to 185 cm (65 to 73 in); yellowish red (5YR 5/8) sandy clay loam; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; firm; pockets and streaks of light brownish gray fine sand; few pockets of red sandy loam; many sand grains are black; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary (Thickness is 11 to 58 cm [4 to 23 in])

Canton Bend soils have more than 30 percent silt in the control section.
Gundy soils have a paralithic contact to Carolina slate rock at 102 to 152 cm (40 to 60 in) deep.
Skyuka soils formed in old alluvium washed from uplands dominantly underlain by dark colored high grade metamorphic rocks.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Hallsummit soils are well drained. Rate of runoff is medium on slopes less than 5 percent, and high on slopes up to 12 percent; permeability is moderately slow.
USE AND VEGETATION: Hallsummit soils are used mainly for woodlands; vegetation is typically shortleaf and loblolly pines, red oak, sweetgum, and other hardwood trees.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southern coastal plain of northwestern Louisiana and eastern Texas. The known extent is moderate.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Red River Parish, Louisiana; 1973. The Hallsummit name is derived from a small community in Red River Parish, Louisiana.
REMARKS: The Hallsummit series was updated in 2002 to specify that it must have a clay tuck within a depth of 152 cm (60 in) and cannot have geologic C materials within a depth of 152 cm (60 in). The Hallsummit series was renamed in 2021. Diagnostic horizons and features in this pedon include:
