TYPE LOCATION: Shasta County, California; about 5 miles southeast of Fall River Mills, 330 feet north of the Cinder Cone Resource Area Rd.; 2,625 feet east and 590 feet north of the southwest corner of sec. 16, T. 36 N., R. 5 E., Jellico NE (Cable Mtn) quadrangle (7.5 minute series).
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Thickness of solum and depth to bedrock is 20 to 40 inches. The mean annual soil temperature is 47 to 52 degrees F. The soil temperature exceeds 41 degrees F from early March to early December. The moisture control section (10 inches to the lithic contact) is dry in all parts from early July to early November (about 110 to 130 days).
The A horizon color is 10YR 5/2, 5/3, 5/4, 4/3; 7.5YR 4/2. Moist color is 10YR 3/2, 3/3 or 7.5YR 3/2. Rock fragments range from 30 to 40 percent cobbles or stones and 5 to 10 percent gravel. Reaction is slightly acid or neutral. Base saturation ranges from 50 to 75 percent.
The Bt horizon color is 10YR 4/4, 5/3, 5/4, 6/4 or 7.5YR 4/4, 6/4. Moist color is 10YR 3/3, 3/4; 7.5YR 3/4, 4/2, 4/4, 4/6 or 5YR 3/2, 4/4. Rock fragments range 30 to 70 percent cobbles and stones and 5 to 10 percent gravel. Clay content averages 18 to 27 percent.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Balake (T WA), Beezee (T WA), Bluenose (CA), Bluesprin (ID), Bobbitt (ID), Fordice (T OR), Gavel (T CA), Hovelton (T ID), Hunsinger (T CA), Jebe (T WA), Keuterville (CA), Legall (T WA), Nashmead (CA), Sallyann (ID), Sauter (T WA), Sawtell (OR), and Tekoa (WA) series. Balake, Beezee, Bluenose, Fordice, Hunsinger, Keuterville, Sawtell, Jebe, Legall, Nashmead, and Sauter soils are greater than 40 inches deep. Bluesprin, Bobbitt, and Sallyann soils have 27 to 35 percent clay in the control section. Gavel soils have a mollic epipedon that includes part of the Bt horizon and have hue of 5YR. Tekoa soils are dry for 60 to 75 days in the summer.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Jellico soils are on hills and lava plateaus. Slopes are 5 to 50 percent. These soils formed in volcanic ash falls mixed with basalt flow material. Elevations are 3,200 to 5,000 feet. The climate is semiarid with warm dry summers and cold moist winters. Mean annual precipitation is 16 to 20 inches. Snowfall is 12 to 24 inches. Mean annual temperature is 45 to 48 degrees F. Frost-free season is 80 to 100 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Gassaway (T), Jellycamp, Splawn (T) and Ollierivas (T) soils. Gassaway soils are less than 20 inches deep and loamy. Jellycamp soils are less than 20 inches deep to a duripan and are clayey. Splawn soils are clayey-skeletal. Ollierivas soils are fine and are underlain by a duripan.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow to rapid runoff; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for wildlife habitat and grazing. The natural vegetation is mainly digger and Jeffrey pine, western juniper, Oregon white oak, bluebunch wheatgrass, bottlebrush squirreltail, Columbia needlegrass, antelope bitterbrush, redbud and mountainmahogany
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northeastern California. The soils are of small extent. MLRA is 22.
