TYPICAL PEDON: Kakyawala ashy sandy loam in an area of forestland, on a 14-percent, southeast-facing slope at an elevation of 1250 m (All textures are apparent field textures.)
Oi--0 to 5 cm; slightly decomposed leaves, needles, twigs, and cones; abrupt smooth boundary
A--5 to 23 cm; ashy sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) dry, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; weakly smeary; many very fine and fine and few medium and coarse roots; common fine irregular pores; slightly acid (pH 6.3), NaF pH 10.2; abrupt smooth boundary
Bw1--23 to 112 cm; ashy sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) dry, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; weakly smeary; common very fine, fine, medium, and coarse roots; common very fine and few fine irregular pores; 5 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.1); NaF pH 11.0; clear smooth boundary
2Bw2--112 to 163 cm; very stony ashy sandy loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) dry, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; weakly smeary; few fine, medium, and coarse roots; few fine and medium irregular pores; 5 percent gravel, 10 percent cobbles, and 30 percent stones; slightly acid (pH 6.5); NaF pH 10.8
TYPE LOCATION: Yakama Nation, Yakima County, Washington, about 2 km southwest of Snowplow Mountain; about 640 m south and 75 m west of the northeast corner of section 16, T. 7 N., R. 11 E.; latitude 46.0970649, longitude -121.4281311, datum WGS 84 (coordinates estimated from section, township, and range)

The Kakyawala series originally was named the Kahmah series. Kakya wala translates to bird creek in Yakama. The type location for this series is near Bird Creek.
