RAUB SERIES


The Raub series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained soils that are deep or very deep to dense till. The Raub soils formed in loess or other silty material and in the underlying loamy till. They are on till plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 940 mm (37 inches), and mean annual air temperature is about 10 degrees C (50 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, mixed, superactive, mesic Aquic Argiudolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Raub silt loam, on a convex, 1 percent slope in a cultivated field at an elevation of about 244 meters (800 feet) above mean sea level. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 25 cm (0 to 10 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; weak fine granular structure; friable; moderately acid; abrupt smooth boundary.

A--25 to 33 cm (10 to 13 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; moderate fine granular structure; friable; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

Bt1--33 to 46 cm (13 to 18 inches); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) silty clay loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; firm; few fine roots; few fine pores; many distinct very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) organo-clay films on faces of peds; common fine faint brown (10YR 4/3) masses of iron accumulation in the matrix; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.

Bt2--46 to 81 cm (18 to 32 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) silty clay loam; weak fine prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; firm; few fine roots; few fine pores; many distinct very dark gray (10YR 3/1) organo-clay films on faces of peds; few fine prominent grayish brown (10YR 5/2) iron depletions in the matrix; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.

Bt3--81 to 94 cm (32 to 37 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) silty clay loam; weak medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; firm; few fine roots; few fine pores; common distinct gray (10YR 5/1) clay film on faces of peds; common fine prominent light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) iron depletions in the matrix; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary.

2Bt4--94 to 127 cm (37 to 50 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; common distinct gray (10YR 5/1) clay films on faces of peds; common fine prominent light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) iron depletions in the matrix; 3 percent gravel; neutral; clear smooth boundary.

2Bt5--127 to 152 cm (50 to 60 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; firm; common distinct dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay films on faces of peds; common fine prominent light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) iron depletions in the matrix; 3 percent gravel; neutral; clear smooth boundary.

2Cd--152 to 178 cm (60 to 70 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) loam; massive; very firm; few fine distinct grayish brown (10YR 5/2) iron depletions in the matrix; 9 percent gravel; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Montgomery County, Indiana; 7 miles east of Linden; 350 feet south and 300 feet west of the northeast corner of sec. 8, T. 20 N., R. 3 W.; USGS Kirkpatrick, Indiana topographic quadrangle; lat. 40 degrees 11 minutes 58.8 seconds N. and long. 86 degrees 46 minutes 20.1 seconds W., NAD 27; UTM Zone 16, 519383 easting and 4449946 northing, NAD 83.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Arrowsmith, Bearpen, Brenton, Edwardsville, Elburn, Grundelein, Hacreek, Harco, Higginsville, Keller, Lafayette, Lawndale, Lisbon, Lismod, Loran, Mundelein, Muscatune, Rooks, Rowley, and Shannondale series. Arrowsmith soils are less than 102 cm (40 inches) to the base of the argillic horizon. Bearpen and Rowley soils average less than 27 percent clay in the particle-size control section. Brenton soils have strata with more than 50 percent sand in the lower part of the series control section. Edwardsville, Hacreek, Higginsville, and Muscatune soils have less than 15 percent sand in the lower part of the series control section. Elburn, Lawndale, and Shannondale soils do not have horizons with more than 15 percent sand within a depth of 102 cm (40 inches). Grundelein and Lafayette soils have more than 10 percent rock fragments in the lower part of the series control section. Harco, Lisbon, Lismod, Mundelein, and Rooks soils have carbonates within a depth of 102 cm (40 inches). Keller soils average more than 32 percent clay in the lower part of the series control section. Loran soils have a paralithic contact within a depth of 152 cm (60 inches).

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Raub soils are on till plains of Wisconsinan age. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. The soils formed in 56 to 102 cm (22 to 40 inches) of loess or other silty material and in the underlying loamy till. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 813 to 1092 mm (32 to 43 inches). Mean annual air temperature ranges from 9 to 12 degrees C (48 to 54 degrees F). Frost-free period ranges from 150 to 180 days. Elevation ranges from 207 to 311 meters (680 to 1,020 feet) above mean sea level.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Brenton, Chalmers, Dana, Drummer, Sable, and Toronto soils. The poorly drained Chalmers, Drummer, and Sable soils are in depressions. Brenton soils are on similar landform positions and have stratified substratums. Dana soils are moderately well drained and are on slightly higher rises. Toronto soils are on similar landform positions but have dark colored surface layers less than 10 inches thick.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Somewhat poorly drained. The depth to the top of an intermittent perched high water table ranges from 15 to 61 cm (0.5 to 2.0 feet) during the winter and spring in normal years. The potential for surface runoff is low. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderately high in the solum and low or moderately low in the dense till substratum. Permeability is moderate in the loess, moderately slow in the till subsoil, and slow or very slow in the dense till substratum.

USE AND VEGETATION: Soils are cropped to corn and soybeans. Wheat is the main small grain. Native vegetation is prairie grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: West-central Indiana, east-central Illinois, and western Ohio; MLRAs 108A, 110, 111A, 111C, and 111D. The type location is in MLRA 111D. The series is of moderate extent.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon: from the surface to a depth of 33 cm (Ap, A horizons).
Argillic horizon: from a depth of 33 to 152 cm (Bt, 2Bt horizons).
Depth to densic contact: at 152 cm (top of 2Cd horizon).
Aquic conditions: redoximorphic features in all horizons below a depth of 33 cm.

This soil is prime farmland where drained.
