TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, semiactive, mesic Typic Rhodudults
TYPICAL PEDON: Stoneville loam (in an area of Stoneville loam, 15 to 25 percent slope), on a 20 percent slope in a hardwood forest. (Colors are for moist soil, unless otherwise indicated.)
A--0 to 5 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/3), dry; moderate fine granular structure; friable; moderately sticky; slightly plastic; common fine to coarse roots; 2 percent, by volume siltstone fragments; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (1 to 10 inches thick)
BA--5 to 13 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/3), dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; moderately sticky, slightly plastic; few fine and medium roots; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (0 to 12 inches thick)
Bt1--13 to 32 inches; dark reddish brown (2.5YR 3/4) clay, reddish brown (2.5YR 4/4), dry; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; few fine and medium roots; thin continuous clay films on faces of peds; few fine flakes of mica; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.
Bt2--32 to 38 inches; dark reddish brown (2.5YR 3/4) clay loam; reddish brown (2.5YR 4/4) dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable, moderately sticky, slightly plastic; few fine roots; common fine flakes of mica; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon is 10 to 40 inches.)
C--38 to 48 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) loam with few seams of clay loam; massive; friable; common flakes of mica; saprolite of siltstone and mudstone; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (5 to 15 inches thick)
Cr--48 to 72 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) siltstone and mudstone; weakly cemented; high excavation difficulty; rock material crushes to loam.
TYPE LOCATION: Rockingham County, North Carolina; about 0.75 mile south of intersection of U.S. 220 Business and U.S. 220 Bypass and the Stoneville city limits, 600 feet west of U.S. 220 Bypass, in woodland; USGS Unknown, NC topographic quadrangle; lat. 00 degrees 00 minutes 00 seconds N. and long. 00 degrees 00 minutes 00 seconds W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Depth to top of Argillic horizon: 1 to 15 inches
Depth to base of Argillic horizon: 20 to 50 inches
Depth to Bedrock: 40 to 60 inches to soft bedrock and greater than 60 inches to hard bedrock
Depth to Seasonal High Water Table: Greater than 60 inches
Thickness of the clayey part of the Bt horizon: 10 to 30 inches thick
Soil Reaction: Moderately acid to very strongly acid, except where surface layers have been limed

Dominant Vegetation: Where cultivated--. Where wooded--Virginia pine, shortleaf pine, chestnut oak, hickory, post oak, southern and northern white oak, northern red oak, sweetgum, and yellow-poplar. Understory species include dogwood, red maple, redbud, huckleberry, and sassafras.
