TYPICAL PEDON: Surrency loam sand--ponded. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)
0i--0 to 1 inch; spongy layer of slightly decomposed moss.
A--1 to 13 inches; black (N 2/) loamy sand; weak fine and medium granular structure; very friable; many small and medium tree and shrub roots; small pockets of uncoated sand grains; extremely acid; clear wavy boundary. (10 to 30 inches thick)
E--13 to 33 inches; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) and dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) sand; single grained; very friable; few fine and medium roots; most sand grains are clean; few coated brown sand grains; extremely acid; gradual smooth boundary. (7 to 24 inches thick)
Btg1--33 to 49 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) sandy loam with pockets of loamy sand; common medium distinct brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) masses of oxidized iron; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; few clay coated sand grains; few small roots; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.
Btg2--49 to 66 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) sandy clay loam; common medium and coarse distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) and strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) masses of oxidized iron; weak medium subangular blocky structure; few distinct clay films on faces of peds; very friable; very strongly acid.
TYPE LOCATION: Appling County, Georgia; 6.0 miles northwest of Surrency, Georgia city limits on Old Baxley-Surrency road, then 0.25 mile north of road.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Depth to Bedrock: Greater than 60 inches
Depth to Seasonal High Water Table: 0 to 6 inches January to December, ponded December to April with ponding occurring less frequently May to November
Soil Reaction: Extremely acid to strongly acid, except where limed

Color--hue of 10YR, 2.5Y, 5Y, or 5G, value of 4 to 8, and chroma of 1 or 2, or neutral with value 4 to 8
Texture (fine-earth fraction)--sandy loam, fine sandy loam, or sandy clay loam. The clay content of the particle-size control section is 10 to 18 percent and below a depth of about 50 inches, 23 to 35 percent.
Redoximorphic features (where present)--common to many masses of oxidized iron in shades of red, yellow, or brown and iron depletions in shades of brown, yellow, olive, or gray
Cg horizon (where present):
Color--hue of 10YR to 5GY, value of 4 through 8, and chroma of 1 or 2, or neutral with value 4 to 8
Texture (fine-earth fraction)--fine sand, loamy fine sand, fine sandy loam, or sandy clay loam
