TYPICAL PEDON: Swedesboro loamy sandy, on a smooth 1 percent slope, in a cultivated field. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted.)
Ap--0 to 10 inches; olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) loamy sand; weak fine granular; very friable; nonsticky, nonplastic; many fine roots; strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 12 inches thick)
BA--10 to 14 inches; light olive brown (2.5Y 5/6) loamy sand; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; non sticky, nonplastic; common fine roots; 5 percent glauconite; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick)
Bt1--14 to 26 inches; olive yellow (2.5Y 6/6) sandy loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; slightly sticky, nonplastic; few fine roots; few faint clay films and clay bridging between sand grains; 5 percent glauconite; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.
Bt2--26 to 30 inches; olive yellow (2.5Y 6/6) sandy clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few fine roots; common faint clay films and clay bridging between sand grains; 5 percent glauconite; very strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary.
Bt3--30 to 40 inches; brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) fine sandy loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few fine roots; few faint clay films and clay bridging between sand grains; 5 percent glauconite; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon is 15 to 45 inches.)
BC--40 to 46 inches; olive yellow (2.5Y 6/8) loamy fine sand; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; nonsticky, nonplastic; 5 percent glauconite; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 8 inches thick)
C1--46 to 54 inches; olive yellow (2.5Y 6/8) sand; single grain; loose, nonsticky, nonplastic; 5 percent glauconite; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary.
C2--54 to 72 inches; 85 percent pale yellow (2.5Y 7/4) and 15 percent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/6) sand; single grain; loose; nonsticky, nonplastic; 10 percent glauconite; very strongly acid.
TYPE LOCATION: Salem County, New Jersey; about 0.5 mile north of the intersection of Auburn Woodstown Road and Sharptown Auburn Road, 0.6 mile east of Auburn Woodstown Road; USGS Woodstown Quadrangle; lat. 39 degrees 42 minutes 47 seconds N. and long. 75 degrees 22 minutes 24 seconds W.

Solum Thickness: 30 to 60 inches
Depth to Bedrock: Greater than 60 inches
Depth to Seasonal High Water Table: Greater than 72 inches
Rock Fragments: Less than 5 percent throughout the profile, mostly fine quartzite gravel
Soil Reaction: Extremely acid to strongly acid throughout the profile, unless limed
Other Features: 1 to 10 percent glauconite in the A and B horizons and 5 to 15 percent glauconite in the C horizon

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:
Adelphia soils--moderately well drained, have a fine-loamy particle-size control section, and have more than 10 percent glauconite in the subsoil, on slightly lower-lying positions
Collington soils--have a fine-loamy particle-size control section and have more than 10 percent glauconite in the subsoil, on similar positions
Freehold soils--have a fine-loamy particle-size control section, on similar positions
Holmdel soils--moderately well drained, have a fine-loamy particle-size control section, on slightly lower-lying positions
Pemberton soils--moderately well drained and have a sandy surface more than 20 inches thick, on slightly higher-lying positions
Sharptown soils--moderately well drained and have a fine-silty particle-size control section, on similar landforms
Tinton soils--have a sandy surface more than 20 inches thick and have more than 10 percent glauconite in the subsoil, on higher-lying positions
Woolwich soils--moderately well drained, on slightly lower-lying positions
MAJOR USES: Growing vegetables, fruit, specialty crops, corn, and soybeans.
VEGETATION: Wooded areas are dominated by black oak, white oak, scarlet oak, and red oaks, yellow-poplar, hickory, and beech.
DISTRIBUTION: The inner Coastal Plain of New Jersey
