COMPETING SERIES: This is the
Parsons series. Parsons soils have a combined thickness of the A horizon and E horizon that is less than 41 cm (16 inches).
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Taloka soils are on interfluves and paleoterraces on plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 3 percent. The soils formed in loamy and clayey colluvium and/or alluvium weathered from interbedded shales and sandstone of Pennsylvanian age, and possibly have a thin loess mantle in some pedons. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 940 to 1143 mm (37 to 45 inches). Mean annual temperature ranges from 14 to 17 degrees C (57 to 62 degrees F). Frost-free period is 190 to 220 days. Elevation is 152 to 366 meters (498 to 1200 feet). Thornthwaite Annual P-E Index ranges from 64 to 80.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Bates,
Choteau, and
Dennis soils, and the competing
Parsons soils. The fine-loamy Bates soils are well drained and are on steeper slopes. Choteau and Dennis soils have mollic epipedons and are on similar landforms. Parsons soils are on similar landforms.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Somewhat poorly drained. Depth to the top of a perched seasonal high water table ranges from 30 to 61 cm (12 to 24 inches) between November and May in normal years. Potential for surface runoff is moderate or high. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is low. Permeability is very slow.
USE AND VEGETATION: Mainly cultivated to small grains, sorghums, and soybeans. A small amount is used for tame pasture and a minor part is used as native range or hayland. Native vegetation is tall grass prairie.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: MLRAs 112, 116, and 118 in northeastern Oklahoma, northwestern Arkansas, and southeastern Kansas. The type location is in MLRA 112. The series is of moderate extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Indianapolis, Indiana.
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Okfuskee County, Oklahoma; 1940.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this series: Ochric epipedon (mollic intergrade): from the surface to a depth of 20 cm (8 inches) (A horizon).
Albic horizon: from a depth of 20 to 71 cm (8 to 28 inches) (E horizon).
Argillic horizon: from a depth of 71 to 152 cm (28 to 60 inches) (Bt horizon).
Aquic conditions: redox features in all horizons below a depth of 20 cm (8 inches).
12/2015 revision: updated parent material and landforms based on review of NASIS data; added metric units; added combined thickness of the A and E horizons to RIC in order to differentiate competing series; removed depth to argillic and depth to redox features from RIC since they are not series differentiae; added MLRAs 116 and 118 to extent.
