TYPE LOCATION: Fayette County, Texas; In La Grange, from the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and Texas Highway 71, 11.2 miles north on U.S. Highway 77, 0.8 mile east on county road, 0.6 mile north on county road, 0.9 mile east on private road and 0.2 mile north in pasture. (Latitude: 30 degrees, 3 minutes, 35 seconds North; Longitude: 96 degrees, 53 minutes, 7 seconds West).
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness is 60 to more than 80 inches. Clay content of the control section ranges from 20 to 35 percent. Clay content decreases by as much as 20 percent within 60 inches of the surface. The mollic epipedon ranges from 20 to 40 inches thick. Content of siliceous pebbles range from 0 to 10 percent by volume throughout.
The A horizon has value of 3 to 5 and chroma of 1 to 3. Thickness of the A horizon is less than 20 inches. Reaction ranges from strongly acid to slightly acid.
The upper Bt horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 or 4, and chroma of 1 to 4. Texture is sandy clay loam, loam or clay loam. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to slightly acid.
The lower Bt horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 1 to 4. Redoximorphic features in shades of brown, red and yellow range from few to many. Texture is sandy clay loam or loam. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to neutral.
The BC horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 2 or 3. Redoximorphic features in shades of brown range from few to many. Texture is fine sandy loam or loam. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to neutral. In some pedons, buried layers of dark colored clay loam or clay occur below a depth of 40 inches.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family. Similar soils are the Bippus, Bosque, Curero, Gageby, Gowen, Medley, Smithville, and Whitesboro series. Bippus, Bosque, Gageby, Gowen, and Whitesboro soils do not have an argillic horizon, have an irregular decrease in organic carbon with depth and have mixed mineralogy. Cuero, Medley, and Smithville soils have mixed mineralogy and are well drained.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Warda soils are on nearly level stream terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 1 percent. Mean annual temperature is 67 to 70 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation ranges from 34 to 42 inches. Frost free days range from 260 to 280 days and elevation ranges from 250 to 350 feet. The Thornwaite annual P-E indices range from 52 to 60.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Burlewash, Navidad, Robco, Rutersville and Uhland series. Burlewash soils are moderately deep and occur on higher lying sideslopes. Navidad soils have a mollic surface and are on slightly higher positions. Robco soils have a sandy surface texture and are on similar positions. Rutersville soils have a gray subsoil and are on slightly higher nearly level upland positions. Uhland soils have a coarse-loamy control section and are adjacent to stream channels.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained. Permeability is moderate. Runoff is negligible.
USE AND VEGETATION: Mainly used for improved pasture; some areas are cultivated to peanuts and truck crops. Native vegetation is mid and tall grasses and mixed hardwoods.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Mainly on stream terraces in the Texas Claypan Land Resource Area. The series is of minor extent.
