PERRYPARK SERIES

The Perrypark series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in locally transported alluvium from reddish brown arkose beds derived from sedimentary and granite bedrock. Perrypark soils are on alluvial fans and valley side slopes. Slopes range from 1 to 30 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 19 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 43 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Typic Argiustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Perrypark coarse sandy loam - grassland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 7 inches; reddish gray (5YR 5/2) coarse sandy loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) moist; moderate fine granular structure; soft, very friable; 5 percent fine angular granite gravel; neutral (pH 6.8); clear smooth boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick)

BAt--7 to 12 inches; reddish gray (5YR 5/2) coarse sandy loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) moist; weak medium prismatic structure parting to medium subangular blocky; slightly hard, very friable; peds are very hard, very friable; thin clay films on some peds and in some root channels and pores; 5 percent fine angular granite gravel; neutral (pH 6.8); clear smooth boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)

Bt--12 to 32 inches; reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4) coarse sandy clay loam, reddish brown (2.5YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to medium and fine subangular blocky; hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; peds are extremely hard, very friable; nearly continuous clay films on peds and in root channels and pores; 5 percent fine angular granite gravel; neutral (pH 6.8); clear smooth boundary. (7 to 30 inches thick)

BC--32 to 40 inches; reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4) coarse sandy loam, reddish brown (2.5YR 4/4) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; extremely hard, friable; thin clay films on some peds and in some root channels and pores; 5 percent fine angular granite gravel; neutral (pH 6.8); gradual wavy boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)

C--40 to 60 inches; light reddish brown (2.5YR 6/4) coarse sandy loam, reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4) moist; massive; extremely hard, very friable; 5 percent fine angular granite gravel; neutral (pH 6.8).

TYPE LOCATION: Douglas County, Colorado; about 7 miles north of Palmer Lake; 800 feet south and 400 feet east of the NW corner of the SW quarter of Sec. 31, T. 9 S, R. 67 W.; Larkspur USGS quad; lat. 39 degrees 13 minutes 22 seconds N. and long. 104 degrees 56 minutes 26 seconds W., NAD 83.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: The soil moisture control section dries out in early summer and is intermittently moist in mid-summer through early fall; ustic moisture regime, typic subclass.
Mean annual soil temperature: 43 to 46 degrees F.
Mean summer soil temperature: 59 to 63 degrees F.
Perrypark soils typically are noncalcareous to depths of more than 60 inches but depth to uniformly calcareous material normally is 40 to 60 or more inches.
Base saturation: 60 to 100 percent; typically more than 80 percent
Depth to the base of the argillic horizon: 15 to 50 inches

A horizon
Hue: 10YR through 2.5YR
Value: 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist
Chroma: 1 through 3.
Texture: sandy loam, coarse sandy loam, gravelly sandy loam
Rock fragment content: 0 to 20 percent; mainly gravel but cobble is included

COMPETING SERIES:
These are the Absarook, Archmesa, Beartooth, Beeno, Bielenberg, Bookcliff, Burtoner, Clancy, Clasoil, Dooley, Doughty, Empedrado, Fairfield, Farnuf, Farside, Felor, Greenway, Gurney, Hangdo, High, Hoppers, Hyalite, Jeffcity, Kokoruda, Livona, Martinsdale, Maudlin, Meagher, Moen, Moento, Pianohill, Placerton, Reeder, Reedwest, Sipple, Snakejohn, Sponseller, Trag, Tragmon, Trazuni, Trujillo, Ulrant, Vida, Watne, Watrous, Williams, and Yegen series.

Absarook, Archmesa, Beeno, Bielenberg, Bookcliff, Burtoner, Clancy, Gurney, Hoppers, Jeffcity, Maudlin, Moen, Moento, Pianohill, Placerton, Reeder, Reedwest, Snakejohn, Ulrant, and Watrous soils: have a lithic paralithic contact within 60 inches.

Clasoil, Greenway, Hangdo, Hyalite, Trag, Tragmon, Trazuni soils have hue yellower than 2.5YR in the argillic horizon.

Beartooth, Beeno, Dooley, Doughty, Empedrado, Fairfield, Farnuf, Felor, Gurney, High, Kokoruda, Livona, Martinsdale, Meagher, Sipple, Trujillo, Ulrant, Vida, Watne, Williams, and Yegen soils have secondary carbonate accumulations.

Sponseller soils have a cobble and cinder substratum.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Perrypark soils are on alluvial fans and valley side slopes. Slopes range from 1 to 30 percent. The soil formed in parent materials locally transported from reddish brown arkose beds of the Lyons and Fountain formations. Elevation: 7,000 to 8,000 feet. Average annual precipitation is 18 to 22 inches, with peak periods of precipitation in the spring and summer. Average annual temperature: 42 to 47 degrees F. The frost-free period is less than 90 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Lonetree soils. Lonetree soils lack an argillic horizon and are coarse textured.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to high runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used as native range and as irrigated and dryland cropland. Native vegetation consists of mainly big and little bluestem, sandreed grass, blue grama, and needleandthread grass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: The foothills and Black Forest areas of east-central Colorado; MLRA 48A and 49. The series is of small extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Bozeman, Montana
