TYPICAL PEDON: Cape Lookout silt loam--cultivated. (Colors are for moist soil)
Ap--O to 7 inches; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) silt loam; moderate fine granular structure; very friable; non-sticky, non-plastic; many fine and very fine roots; few fine and medium disctinct dark brown (10YR 3/3) irregularly shaped iron masses on ped faces in the lower part of the horizon; moderately acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 10 inches thick)
BA--7 to 12 inches; very dark gray (2.5Y 3/1) silt loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; slightly sticky, slightly plastic; common fine roots; common fine and medium distinct dark brown (10YR 3/3) and olive yellow (2.5Y 6/6) irregulary shaped iron masses distributed uniformly throughout the horizon; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)
Btg1--12 to 16 inches; dark gray (2.5Y 4/1) clay loam; moderate coarse subangular blocky structure; very firm; moderately sticky, moderately plastic; few fine roots; many fine and few medium dendritic tubular pores; common medium distinct olive yellow (2.5Y 6/6) and dark brown (10YR 3/3) irregularly shaped iron masses distributed uniformly throughout the horizon; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.
Btg2--16 to 37 inches; gray (2.5Y 5/1) clay; strong coarse subangular blocky structure; firm; very sticky, moderately plastic; few very fine roots; common medium distinct dark gray (2.5Y 4/1) and light gray (2.5Y 7/1) irregularly shaped iron depletions and many medium and coarse prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/3) iron masses distibuted uniformly throughout the horizon; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.
Btg3--37 to 42 inches; gray (5Y 5/1) clay; moderate coarse subangular blocky structure; firm; moderately sticky, moderately plastic; common medium distinct dark gray (2.5Y 4/1) and light gray (2.5Y 7/1) irregularly shaped iron depletions and many medium distinct greenish gray (5GY 5/1) masses of iron depletions distibuted uniformly throughout the horizon; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Btg horizons is 15 to 40 inches)
BCg--42 to 50 inches; gray (5Y 5/1) sandy clay loam; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; firm; moderately sticky, moderately plastic; common medium distinct dark gray (2.5Y 4/1) and light gray (2.5Y 7/1) irregularly shaped iron depletions; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (0 to 12 inches thick)
Cg--50 to 62 inches; gray (2.5Y 6/1) sandy loam; massive; friable; slightly sticky, slightly plastic; strongly acid.
TYPE LOCATION: Pasquotank County, North Carolina; USGS South Mills, NC topographic quadrangle; lat. 36 degrees 22 minutes 36 seconds N. and long. 76 degrees 22 minutes 13 seconds W.; in cultivated field.

Texture--loam, sandy loam, silt loam, fine sandy loam, very fine sandy loam, or their mucky analogues
BA or BE horizon:
Color--hue of 10YR to 5Y, value of 3 or 4, and chroma of 1 or 2, or is neutral with value of 3 or 4
Texture--clay loam, silty clay loam, sandy clay loam, silt loam, or loam.
Redoximorphic features (if they occur)--iron masses in shades of brown or yellow
Btg horizon:
Color--hue of 10YR or 5GY, value of 4 or 7, and chroma of 1 or 2, or is neutral with value of 4 to 6
Texture--clay, sandy clay, clay loam, or silty clay with upper 20 inches
containing 35 to 60 percent clay.
Redoximorphic features (if they occur)--iron masses in shades of brown, yellow, or red and iron depletions in shades of olive or gray
BCg horizon:
Color--hue of 10YR to 5GY value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 1 or 2, or it is neutral with values of 4 to 7
Texture--sandy clay loam, clay loam, sandy clay, loam, silty clay loam, or sandy loam
Redoximorphic features (if they occur)--iron masses in shades of brown, yellow, or red and iron depletions in shades of olive or gray

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Cape Fear soils in the same family. Cape Fear soils are formed in marine and fluvial sediments and are geographically located on stream terraces.

Aquic conditions - colors with chroma of 2 or less below the surface layer caused by saturation.
