TYPICAL PEDON: Weeksville loam - cultivated. (Colors are for moist soil)

Ap--0 to 6 inches; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) loam; moderate medium granular structure; friable; common fine roots; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (5 to 7 inches thick)

AB--6 to 13 inches; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (5 to 12 inches thick)

Bg1--13 to 32 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine flakes of mica; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Bg2--32 to 38 inches; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine flakes of mica; few fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) rounded masses of iron accumulation with clear boundaries in the matrix; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (15 to 24 inches thick)

BCg--38 to 45 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; common medium faint yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) rounded masses of iron accumulation with clear boundaries in the matrix; common fine flakes of mica; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)

Cgl--45 to 60 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) loam; massive; friable; common medium distinct light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) and few fine prominent dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) rounded masses of iron accumulation with clear boundaries in the matrix; common fine flakes of mica; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.

Cg2--60 to 72 inches; olive gray (5Y 5/2) fine sandy loam; massive; friable; common medium distinct olive (5Y 5/6) and yellowish red (5YR 4/6) rounded masses of iron accumulation with clear boundaries in the matrix; common fine flakes of mica; moderately acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Hyde County, North Carolina; about 1 mile west of Fairfield, about 0.9 mile west of the intersection of North Carolina Highway 94 and Secondary Road 1305, about 350 feet south of Secondary Road 1305 on a farm path, in a cultivated field. Fairfield USGS topographic quadrangle; lat. 35 degrees 32 minutes 12 seconds N. and long. 76 degrees 14 minutes 25 seconds W.

Soil Reaction: Very strongly acid to strongly acid except where limed;
Mica Content: Few to common flakes in the lower Btg and Cg horizons

Texture--silt loam, very fine sandy loam, or loam

AB horizon:
Color--hue of 10YR to 5Y, or is neutral, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 0 to 2

Bg horizon:
Color--hue of 10YR to 5Y, or is neutral, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 0 to 2

USE AND VEGETATION:
Major Uses: Mostly cultivated
Dominant Vegetation: Where cultivated--corn, soybeans, wheat, cucumbers, cabbage, potatoes, and pasture. Where wooded--loblolly pine, pond pine, blackgum, green ash, sweetgum, and water oak. Understory species include large gallberry, wax myrtle (southern bayberry), inkberry (bitter gallberry), greenbrier, cane, and sweetbay.

Distribution: Tidewater and lower Coastal Plain of North Carolina and Virginia
Extent: Small

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Pasquotank County, North Carolina; 1951.

REMARKS: The 08/2008 revision moves the type location from Pasquotank County, North Carolina to Hyde County, North Carolina. The pedon in Hyde County is more representative of the series concept.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Aquic moisture regime
Umbric epipedon--the zone from the surface to a depth of 13 inches
Cambic horizon--the zone from depths of 13 to 45 inches
Contrasting layers are at depths of 45 to 72 inches.
