TYPE LOCATION: Baraga County, Michigan; about one-half mile south of the village of Three Lakes; 1,600 feet north and 400 feet east of the corner of sec. 20, T. 48 N., R. 31 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 15 to 30 inches. The solum ranges from very strongly acid to moderately acid and the substratum ranges from strongly acid to slightly acid. Pebble content ranges from 0 to 10 percent in the solum and from 10 to 50 percent in the substratum. Cobble content ranges from 0 to 10 throughout. The weighted average cntent of rock fragments in the particle size control section and lower part of the series control section is less than 35 percent. Stone content covering the surface ranges from less than 0.01 percent to 0.1 percent.
The A horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR or is neutral, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 0 to 3. Cultivated pedons have an Ap horizon, up to 7 inches thick with similar colors as the A horizon. The E horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 2 or 3. The A and E horizons are fine sandy loam, or very fine sandy loam. Some pedons have an Oe horizon with hue of 5YR to 10YR or neutral, value of 2 and chroma of 0 to 2.
The Bs1 horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, and value and chroma of 3 or 4. The Bs2 horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 4 to 6. A Bhs horizon, less than 3 inches thick, is in some pedons with hue of 5YR to 10YR, and value and chroma of 2 to 3. The Bhs or Bs horizons are very fine sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loam or cobbly analogs of these textures.
The 2C horizons have hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 3 to 6. They are stratified sand, loamy sand, coarse sand or the gravelly or very gravelly analogs of these textures.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series. Closely related are the Amasa, Pence, and Net series. The Amasa and Pence soils do not have mottles in the E horizon or upper spodic horizon. The Net soils have a fragipan and formed in glacial till.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils are on outwash plains, stream terraces, and moraines. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 30 to 34 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 40 to 43 degrees F.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the well drained Amasa, Padus, and Pence soils, the moderately well drained and well drained Champion soils and the very poorly drained Carbondale and Tacoosh mucks. The Amasa, Pence, Padus, and Champion soils are on surrounding uplands and the Carbondale and Tacoosh mucks are in depressions and drainageways.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained. Depth to the seasonal high water table ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 feet from November to May. Runoff is slow. Permeability is moderate in the solum and very rapid in the substratum.
USE AND VEGETATION: Nearly all of this soil is forested with red maple, balsam fir, quaking aspen, yellow birch, paper birch, white spruce, and black spruce.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan and possibly Northern Wisconsin. The extent of this soil is small.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Iron County, Michigan, 1927
REMARKS: Classification was changed to agree with ST Issue #17 on 6 Sept 94 by CLG. Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: ochric epipedon - the zone from the surface to 4 inches (A horizon); albic horizon - the zone from 4 to 5 inches (E horizon); spodic horizon - the zone from 5 to 22 inches (Bs1 and Bs2 horizons); aquic subgroup - aquic soil moisture regime and mottles in the upper spodic horizon.
