CLEBIT SERIES

The Clebit series consists of shallow, well drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils over hard sandstone that is tilted about 40 degrees from horizontal. These soils formed in material weathered from sandstone of Pennsylvanian age. These very gently sloping to steep soils are on mountain tops and mountain sideslopes of forested uplands of the Ouachita Mountains (MLRA 119) and the Arkansas Valley and Ridges (MLRA 118A and 118B). Slopes are 2 to 60 percent. Mean annual temperature is 63 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is 48 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, siliceous, semiactive, thermic Lithic Dystrudepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Clebit very gravelly very fine sandy loam, in forest. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 5 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) very gravelly very fine sandy loam; moderate fine and medium granular structure; very friable; many fine and medium roots; fragments of sandstone make up 40 percent by volume; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 6 inches thick)

Bw--5 to 12 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) very gravelly very fine sandy loam; moderate fine and medium granular structure; very friable; common fine and medium roots; fragments of sandstone make up 45 percent by volume; slightly acid; clear irregular boundary. (4 to 14 inches thick)

R--12 to 15 inches; hard gray sandstone; fractured and tilted about 40 degrees from horizontal.

TYPE LOCATION: Pushmataha County, Oklahoma; about 1 mile north and 3 miles east of Albion; 2420 feet south and 20 feet west of the northeast corner of Sec. 1, T. 2 N., R 21 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness and depth to hard sandstone bedrock ranges from 10 to 20 inches and may be extremely variable within short distances.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 2 or 3. Texture is loam, very fine sandy loam, and fine sandy loam in the fine earth fraction, and includes very gravelly, cobbly, stony, very stony, extremely stony, and bouldery analogs. Content of coarse fragments of sandstone ranges from 35 to 80 percent by volume. About 35 to 50 percent by volume is less than 76 mm in diameter and 0 to 25 percent by volume is more than 76 mm in diameter. Reaction ranges from slightly acid to strongly acid.

The Bw horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 3 to 6. Some pedons have mottles in shades of red, brown, or yellow. Texture is loam, very fine sandy loam, and fine sandy loam in the fine earth fraction, and includes very gravelly, extremely gravelly, very cobbly, stony, very stony, extremely stony, and bouldery analogs. Content of fragments of sandstone ranges from 35 to 75 percent by volume. About 35 to 50 percent by volume is less than 76 mm in diameter and 0 to 25 percent by volume is more than 76 mm in diameter. Reaction ranges from slightly acid
to very strongly acid.

The R layer is grayish, yellowish, or brownish sandstone that is hard, massive, fractured and tilted more than 20 degrees from horizontal.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family. Soils in closely related families include the Manteo and Pickens series with mixed mineralogy, and the Goldston, Hawthorne, Nashoba, and Sulphura series that are in a Typic subgroup.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Clebit soils are on long, narrow, very gently sloping to steep hills areas of the Ouachita Mountains and the Arkansas Valley and Ridges. Slopes range from 2 to 60 percent. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 42 to 56 inches. Mean annual temperature ranges from 60 degrees to 64 degrees F. Thornthwaite annual P-E indices are greater than 64 Frost free days range from 200 to 220.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Nashoba and Pickens series and the Bengal, Carnasaw, Denman, Honobia, Panama, Pirum, Stapp, Sherwood, Sobol, Tuskahoma, and Zafra series. Bengal, Carnasaw, Denman, Honobia, Panama, Pirum, Stapp, Sherwood, Sobol, and Zafra soils have Bt horizons that are more than 20 inches thick. Bengal, Carnasaw, Denman, Honobia, Nashoba, Pirum, Stapp, Sobol, and Zafra soils are on sideslopes below Clebit soils. Panama and Sherwood soils are on footslopes. Pickens and Tuskahoma soils are on the same landscape as Clebit soils.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Clebit soils are well drained. Runoff is very low to very high and permeability is moderately rapid.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mainly as native range for beef cattle. Native vegetation is mainly scrubby hardwoods with an understory of grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Ouachita Mountains and the Arkansas Valley and Ridges of Oklahoma and possibly Arkansas. The series is extensive.
