GUCKEEN SERIES


The Guckeen series consists of very deep somewhat poorly drained soils that formed in 50 to 100 centimeters of clayey lacustrine sediments and in the underlying loamy, calcareous till. These soils are on plane to convex slopes on nearly level to gently undulating till plains or ground moraines. Slope ranges from 1 to 6 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 8 degrees C. Mean annual precipitation is about 735 millimeters.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, mesic Aquertic Hapludolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Guckeen silty clay loam, on a slightly convex slope of 2 percent, on a clayey mantled ground moraine, in a cultivated field, at an elevation of about 320 meters above sea level. (Colors are for moist conditions unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 20 centimeters; black (10YR 2/1) silty clay loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) dry; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; friable; slightly acid; abrupt smooth boundary.

A1--20 to 30 centimeters; black (10YR 2/1) silty clay, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

A2--30 to 38 centimeters; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) silty clay, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

Bw1--38 to 46 centimeters; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) silty clay; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) and dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) coats on faces of peds; strong fine angular blocky structure; firm; common very dark gray (10YR 3/1) earthworm casts; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

Bw2--46 to 61 centimeters; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) silty clay; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) coats on faces of peds; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to moderate fine subangular blocky; firm; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

2Bw3--61 to 76 centimeters; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) clay loam; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) coats on faces of peds; moderate coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate fine and medium subangular blocky; firm; about 5 percent gravel; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary.

2Cg1--76 to 173 centimeters; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) clay loam; massive; friable; common medium faint olive gray (5Y 5/2) iron depletions, many fine prominent olive (5Y 5/6), and few medium prominent red (2.5YR 4/8) iron concentrations; about 5 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline.

2Cg2--173 to 203 centimeters; olive gray (5Y 5/2) loam; massive; friable; common medium dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) and common medium prominent brown (7.5YR 4/4) iron concentrations; about 6 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) 103-Central Iowa and Minnesota Till Prairies, Waseca County, Minnesota subset; about 2 miles south and 4 miles west of Waldorf; located about 100 feet east and 100 feet north of the southwest corner of section 7, T. 105 N., R. 24 W.; USGS Mapleton NE topographic quadrangle; lat. 43 degrees 54 minutes 23 seconds N. and long. 93 degrees 46 minutes 03 seconds W., NAD 83.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Collinwood, Kandiyohi, Lakeport, Muscotah, Nameoki, and Ocheda series.
Collinwood--have a sand content that averages less than 15 percent in the particle-size control section
Kandiyohi--have moist bulk density of 1.6 to 1.8 g/cc in the lower third of the series control section
Lakeport--have a sand content that averages less than 15 percent in the particle-size control section
Muscotah--have a mollic epipedon more than 90 centimeters thick
Nameoki--do not have carbonates in the series control section and have a sand content of 10 to 95 percent in the lower third of the series control section
Ocheda--do not have rock fragments in the upper two thirds of the series control section

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: these are the Kamrar, Lura, Marna, and Okoboji soils.
Kamrar--are on higher landscape positions on moraines or till plains and have a frequently saturated zone between depths of 0.75 and 1 meter during the wettest periods of years when precipitation is within one standard deviation of 30 year mean annual precipitation
Lura and Okoboji--are on lower landscape positions and in closed depressions and are ponded during the wettest periods of years when precipitation is within one standard deviation of the 30 year mean annual precipitation
Marna--are on slightly lower landscape position on flats and shallow swales and a have a frequently saturated zone between depths of 0.15 and 0.45 meter during the wettest periods of years when precipitation is within one standard deviation of 30 year mean annual precipitation

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage class--somewhat poorly drained--a frequently saturated zone occurs between depths of 0.45 and 0.75 meter during the wettest periods of years when precipitation is within one standard deviation of 30 year mean annual precipitation
Saturated hydraulic conductivity--0.10 to 1.00 micrometers per second in the clayey sediments and 1.00 to 10.00 micrometers per second in the till

USE AND VEGETATION:
Most areas are cultivated. The principal crops are corn and soybeans. The native vegetation is big bluestem, little bluestem, switchgrass, and other grasses of the tall grass prairie.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
mollic epipedon--the zone from the surface to a depth of 38 centimeters (Ap, A1, and A2 horizons);
cambic horizon--the zone from a depth of 38 to 76 centimeters (Bw1, Bw2, and 2Bw3 horizons);
udic moisture regime.

Aquertic subgroup based on 2 chroma colors within a depth of 75 centimeters and a linear extensibility of 6.0 centimeters or more between the surface and a depth of 100 centimeters.
