TAXONOMIC CLASS: Euic, thermic Typic Haplosaprists

TYPICAL PEDON: Longshoal mucky peat, on a nearly flat saltwater tidal marsh--wildlife habitat.(Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Oese--0 to 42 centimeters; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) broken face and rubbed, mucky peat; about 30 percent fiber unrubbed, 20 percent fiber rubbed; H5 von Post humification; many fine, medium, and coarse roots; moderate sulfurous odor; neutral (6.86 pH, 1:1 water), strongly acid (5.34 pH, 1:1 water) after moist incubation; electrical conductivity (4.88 dS/m, 1:5 water); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 45 centimeters thick)

Oase1--42 to 65 centimeters; black (10YR 2/1) broken face and rubbed, muck; about 20 percent fiber unrubbed, 10 percent fibers rubbed; H7 von Post humification; many fine roots, common medium and coarse roots; moderate sulfurous odor; neutral (6.78 pH, 1:1 water), moderately acid (5.57 pH, 1:1 water) after moist incubation; electrical conductivity (6.16 dS/m, 1:5 water); gradual smooth boundary.

Oase2--65 to 90 centimeters; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) broken face and rubbed, muck; about 25 percent fibers unrubbed, 10 percent rubbed; H7 von Post humification; common fine and medium roots; moderate sulfurous odor; neutral (6.79 pH, 1:1 water), strongly acid (5.12 pH, 1:1 water) after moist incubation; electrical conductivity (6.12 dS/m, 1:5 water); clear smooth boundary.

Oase3--90 to 114 centimeters; black (2.5Y 2.5/1) broken face and rubbed, muck; about 10 percent fibers unrubbed, 3 percent rubbed; H9 von Post humification; common fine and medium roots; moderate sulfurous odor; neutral (6.73 pH, 1:1 water), strongly acid (5.01 pH, 1:1 water) after moist incubation; electrical conductivity (6.27 dS/m, 1:5 water); gradual smooth boundary.

O'ese--114 to 137 centimeters; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) broken face and rubbed, mucky peat; about 35 percent fibers unrubbed, 25 percent rubbed; H5 von Post humification; few fine roots; moderate sulfurous odor; neutral (6.80 pH, 1:1 water), very strongly acid (4.87 pH, 1:1 water) after moist incubation; electrical conductivity (5.12 dS/m, 1:5 water); clear smooth boundary.

O'ase--137 to 162 centimeters; black (10YR 2/1) broken face and rubbed, muck; about 15 percent fibers unrubbed, 5 percent rubbed; H7 von Post humification; few fine roots; strong sulfurous odor; neutral (6.66 pH, 1:1 water), extremely acid (4.30 pH, 1:1 water) after moist incubation; electrical conductivity (5.40 dS/m, 1:5 water); gradual smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of O horizons is 130 to 200 centimeters thick)

Ase1--162 to 190 centimeters; black (2.5Y 2.5/1) mucky sandy loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; very fluid; few fine roots; strong sulfurous odor; neutral (6.65 pH, 1:1 water), moderately acid (5.56 pH, 1:1 water) after moist incubation; electrical conductivity (6.46 dS/m, 1:5 water); gradual smooth boundary.

Ase2--190 to 215 centimeters; black (10YR 2/1) sandy loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; moderately fluid; few fine roots; slight sulfurous odor; neutral (6.71 pH, 1:1 water), extremely acid (3.79 pH, 1:1 water) after moist incubation; electrical conductivity (4.18 dS/m, 1:5 water). (Combined thickness of the Ase horizons is 0 to 50 centimeters thick.)

TYPE LOCATION: Hyde County, North Carolina; in Swanquarter approximately 1.2 miles west of the intersection of Main Street and North Carolina Highway 45, and approximately 65 feet due west of Shingle Creek in a marsh within Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge; Swanquarter USGS topographic quadrangle.

Rindge soils--are in freshwater marshes, have mean annual precipitation of less than 508 millimeters and are often used for commodity crop production.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:
These are the Acredale, Argent, Backbay, Brookman, Delway, and the Hydeland series.
Except for Delway, all of these are mineral soils and are at higher elevations.
Delway soils--have organic layers 40 to 130 centimeters (16 to 51 inches) thick.

USE AND VEGETATION:
Major uses--The soils are primarily utilized for wetland wildlife habitat.
Native vegetation--The vegetation is saltwater tolerant herbaceous plants and includes marshhay cordgrass, switchgrass, saltmarsh bulrush, saltmarsh cordgrass, saltmeadow cordgrass, olney bulrush, big cordgrass, and needlegrass rush (black needlerush).

General area--Coastal tidal marsh areas North Carolina and possibly South Carolina and Virginia.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Hyde County, North Carolina; 1996.

REMARKS: Longshoal soils were previously mapped with the Lafitte series (LA). The Lafitte series was reclassified as loamy, mixed, euic, hyperthermic Terric Medisaprists.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon--
Histosols (Typic)--have organic materials that total 40 cm or more between the soil surface and a depth of 50 centimeters and total thickness of organic materials exceeds 130 centimeters in depth - the zone from a depth of 0 to 162 cm (Oese, Oase1, Oase2, Oase3, O'ese, O'ase).
Hemic soil materials--the zone from the soil surface to 42 centimeters (0 to 16 inches) and 114 to 137 centimeters (45 to 54 inches). (Oese and O'ese horizons)
Sapric soil materials--the zone from 42 to 114 centimeters (16 to 45 inches) and 137 to 162 centimeters (54 to 64 inches). (Oase1, Oase2, Oase3 and O'ase horizons)
Peraquic conditions--continuous endosaturation with very frequent tidal flooding.
Hyposulfidic soil materials--sulfurous odors, and incubated pH decrease greater than 1.0 unit and remains above 4.0 the zone from the soil surface to 200 centimeters.
