TYPICAL PEDON: Missak mucky peat - grass herbaceous depression at elevation 100 meters (330 feet). (All colors are for moist soil, unless otherwise noted.)

Oe--0 to 4 centimeters (0 to 2 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2), dry; mucky peat; very friable, soft, nonsticky, nonplastic; common very fine, fine, and medium roots throughout; very strongly acid (pH 4.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (1 to 25 cm, 1 to 10 in thick)

C1--4 to 25 centimeters (2 to 10 inches); very pale brown (10YR 7/3), very pale brown (10YR 8/3), dry; ashy loamy very fine sand; massive; very friable, soft, nonsticky, nonplastic; many very fine, fine, common medium roots throughout; moderately acid (pH 5.6); clear wavy boundary.

C2--25 to 31 centimeters (10 to 12 inches); light gray (10YR 7/1) ashy fine sand; massive; single grain; loose, nonsticky, nonplastic; common very fine, fine, and medium roots throughout; strongly acid (pH 5.3); abrupt wavy boundary. (Combined thickness is 8 to 36 cm, 3 to 14 in thick)

2Oa--31 to 150 centimeters (12 to 59 inches); 80 percent dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) and 20 percent very dark gray (10YR 3/1) muck; very friable, soft, nonsticky, nonplastic; strongly acid (pH 5.1); abrupt irregular boundary. (82 to 119 cm, 32 to 47 in thick)

3C--150 to 200 centimeters (59 to 79 inches); very gravelly sandy loam; massive; very friable, slightly hard, nonsticky, nonplastic; 50 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; strongly acid (pH 5.3).

Pasagshak soils lack thick organic horizons, have sandy-skeletal control sections, lack aquic conditions less than 41 cm (16 in), and occur on slightly higher flood plains and drainageways.
Sa soils have hemic organic materials and occur on similar landform positions.
Salonie soils lack thick organic horizons, have sandy-skeletal control sections, and occur on slightly higher flood plains and drainageways.
Tonki soils lack thick organic horizons, have andic properties, and occur on slightly higher flood plains and drainageways.
Yukuk soils lack thick organic horizons, have andic properties, have sandy-skeletal control sections, and occur on slightly higher flood plains and drainageways.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:

Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity: very high in the Oe horizon, moderately high to high in the C horizon, very high in the 2Oa horizon, and moderately high to very high in the 3C.

USE AND VEGETATION:
The natural vegetation is dominantly sedges and water tolerant grasses. The principal use is grazing, but most areas are used only by wildlife.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: MLRA 220 Alexander Archipelago-Gulf of Alaska Coast and MLRA 225 Southern Alaska Peninsula Mountains.
Extent: moderate.
