ROSEDHU SERIES

The Rosedhu series consists of deep, poorly drained, moderately permeable soils formed in sandy marine sediments. These soils are on low, nearly level areas on terraces of the Lower Coastal Plain. The water table is near or above the soil surface for as much as 7 months annually. Slopes are less than 2 percent. (Note: taxonomic placement ONLY was updated)

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy, mixed, thermic Typic Alaquods

TYPICAL PEDON: Rosedhu fine sand--forested. (Colors are for moist soil.)

A1--0 to 11 inches; black (10YR 2/1) fine sand; weak fine granular structure; very friable; many fine, medium and coarse roots; many clean sand grains; extremely acid; clear wavy boundary. (10 to 16 inches thick)

B21h--11 to 17 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) fine sand; many coarse distinct dark brown (7.5YR 4/2) mottles; weak fine granular structure; friable, slightly brittle; few fine and medium roots; sand grains coated with organic matter; few pockets of uncoated sand grains; extremely acid; gradual wavy boundary. (4 to 38 inches thick)

B22h--17 to 25 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 4/2) fine sand; many coarse distinct dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) streaks and mottles; weak fine granular structure; friable, slightly brittle; few fine and medium roots; few pockets of uncoated sand grains; extremely acid; gradual wavy boundary. (6 to 23 inches thick)

A'2--25 to 53 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/2) fine sand; many coarse faint dark brown (7.5YR 4/2) and common medium distinct dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) streaks and mottles; single grained; loose; very strongly acid. (6 to 47 inches thick)

B'h--53 to 70 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) fine sand; common medium distinct reddish brown (5YR 4/4), reddish gray (5YR 5/2), and very dusky red (2.5YR 3/2) mottles; massive; very friable, slightly brittle; many coarse very dusky red (2.5YR 3/2) concretions; strongly acid; clear wavy boundary. (12 to 29 inches thick)

C--70 to 80 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) fine sand; many medium distinct dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) and dark brown (7.5YR 4/2) mottles; single grained; loose; common medium very dusky red (2.5YR 3/2) concretions; moderately acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Beaufort County, South Carolina; 3.2 miles southwest of Bluffton, l mile southwest of club house on Palmetto Bluff, 550 yards of entrance to club house, 100 feet north of plantation road. Elevation is about 20 feet.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The soil is sand or fine sand to depths
of more than 72 inches. It is extremely acid to strongly acid in about the upper 25 inches and very strongly acid to slightly acid below about 25 inches. The Bh horizon is within 20 inches of the surface.

The A1 horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 1. When dry, the A1 horizon has a salt-and-pepper appearance. The A2 horizon, where present, has hue of 10YR or neutral, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 1.

The Bh horizon, or where present, the B'h horizon, has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 2 to 4, and chroma of 1 to 4. Tongues or pockets of grayish sand are in some pedons.

The A'2 horizon, where present, has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 1 to 3.

The C horizon has hue of 10YR, 2.5Y, or neutral; value of 3 to 7; and chroma of 0 to 3. Mottles in shades of red, brown, or yellow are in most pedons.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Ridgeland series in the same family and the Baratari, Echaw, Leon, Lynn Haven, Mascotte, Olustee, Seagate, and Seewee series in similar families. Baratari, Echaw, Leon, Mascotte, Olustee, Seagate, and Seewee soils do not have an umbric epipedon. Lynn Haven soils have siliceous mineralogy. Ridgeland soils have a spodic horizon within 10 inches of the soil surface.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Rosedhu soils occur on low, nearly level areas on the Pamlico Terrace of the Lower Coastal Plains with slopes less than 2 percent. The soil formed in sandy marine sediments. Near the type location the average annual rainfall is about 48 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 66 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Baratari, Ridgeland, and Seewee series plus the Fripp, Kiawah, Polawana, Seabrook, Wando, and Yemassee series. Fripp, Polawana, Seabrook, Wando, and Yemassee soils do not have Bh horizons.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained; slow runoff; permeability is rapid except in the Bh layers where it is moderate to moderately rapid. The water table is near or above the soil surface for as much as 7 months annually.

USE AND VEGETATION: A small acreage of soil is used for corn, soybeans, truck crops, and improved pasture. Most of the areas remain in natural vegetation consisting of slash and longleaf pine
or a few cypress and bay trees with an undergrowth of saw palmetto, gallberry, huckleberry, and pineland threeawn.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Lower Coastal Plain of South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. The series is of moderate extent.
