SCIOTOVILLE SERIES


The Sciotoville series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils that are shallow or moderately deep to a fragipan. These soils formed in old alluvium. They are on terraces. Slope ranges from 0 to 25 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 1067 mm (42 inches), and mean annual air temperature is about 12 degrees C (54 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, mixed, active, mesic Aquic Fragiudalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Sciotoville silt loam, on a convex 1 percent slope on the crest of a low ridge in a cultivated field. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap1--0 to 20 cm (0 to 8 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) silt loam, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) dry; few fine faint specks of brown (10YR 5/3); weak fine and medium granular structure; friable; few fine dark iron and manganese oxide concretions; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary.

Ap2--20 to 33 cm (8 to 13 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) silt loam, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) dry; few fine distinct specks of yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) subsoil material; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; firm; few roots; few fine dark iron and manganese oxide concretions; moderately acid; abrupt smooth boundary. [Combined thickness of the Ap horizon is 18 to 36 cm (7 to 14 inches).]

Bt1--33 to 56 cm (13 to 22 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silt loam; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few roots; common faint grayish brown (10YR 5/2) clay films on faces of peds; many faint brown (10YR 5/3) silt coatings on faces of peds; common fine faint brown (10YR 5/3) iron depletions; common medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; common fine dark iron and manganese oxide concretions; few fine mica flakes; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary.

Bt2--56 to 86 cm (22 to 34 inches); brown (10YR 5/3) silt loam; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few roots; common faint brown (10YR 5/3) silt coatings and clay films on faces of peds; common medium faint grayish brown (10YR 5/2) iron depletions; common medium prominent yellowish red (5YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; common fine dark iron and manganese oxide concretions; few fine mica flakes; strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. [Combined thickness of the Bt horizon is 25 to 71 cm (10 to 28 inches).]

Btx1--86 to 117 cm (34 to 46 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/4) silt loam; weak very coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium platy; very firm; many distinct brown (10YR 4/3) clay films on faces of peds; common medium distinct brown (7.5YR 5/2) iron depletions; common medium distinct yellowish red (5YR 4/6) masses of iron accumulation; many fine and medium dark iron and manganese oxide concretions; common fine mica flakes; brittle; strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary.

Btx2--117 to 150 cm (46 to 59 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/4) silt loam; weak very coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium platy and subangular blocky; very firm; many distinct brown (10YR 4/3) clay films on faces of peds; common medium distinct brown (7.5YR 5/2) iron depletions; common fine distinct yellowish red (5YR 4/6) masses of iron accumulation; common medium faint yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) masses of iron accumulation; many fine and medium dark iron and manganese oxide concretions; common fine mica flakes; brittle; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. [Combined thickness of the Btx horizon is 20 to 102 cm (8 to 40 inches).]

C--150 to 175 cm (59 to 69 inches); brown (10YR 5/3) silt loam; massive; friable; common fine faint grayish brown (10YR 5/2) iron depletions; common fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; few fine dark iron and manganese oxide concretions; common fine mica flakes; strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Scioto County, Ohio; 1.25 miles south of Franklin Furnace, in Green Township; 6,800 feet south of the junction of Gallia Pike and Junior Furnace Road along Gallia Pike, then 1,450 feet west-southwest.

Some pedons have a thin A horizon and an E horizon.

Bt horizon:
Hue: 5YR, 7.5YR, or 10YR
Value: 4 or 5
Chroma: 3 to 6, and low chroma redoximorphic features within the upper 25 cm (10 inches)
Texture: commonly silt loam or silty clay loam and less commonly loam with a high percentage of very fine sand
Rock fragment content: 0 to 5 percent
Reaction: very strongly acid or strongly acid

Some pedons have a BA or BE horizon.

Btx horizon:
Hue: 5YR, 7.5YR, or 10YR
Value: 4 to 6
Chroma: 3 to 6
Texture: silt loam, silty clay loam, or loam
Rock fragment content: 0 to 5 percent
Reaction: very strongly acid or strongly acid in the upper part and very strongly acid to moderately acid in the lower part

C horizon:
Hue: 7.5YR or 10YR
Value: 4 or 5
Chroma: 3 to 6
Texture: stratified or has dominant textures of loam, silt loam, silty clay loam, or sandy loam with thin lenses of loamy sand in some pedons
Rock fragment content: 0 to 14 percent
Reaction: strongly acid to slightly acid

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Chalfont, Gudgel, Haubstadt, Nabb, Pierpont, Plumfield, Robbs, and Shakamak series. Chalfont soils formed in loess and residuum and have a lithologic discontinuity in the lower part of the series control section. Gudgel soils have a lithic contact within a depth of 152 cm (60 inches). Haubstadt and Robbs soils do not have mica flakes within the solum. Nabb, Plumfield, and Shakamak soils are more than 203 cm (80 inches) to the base of the argillic horizon. Pierpont soils do not have an argillic horizon above the fragipan.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Sciotoville soils are on stream terraces, mainly along the Ohio River and its upper tributaries. Slope gradients commonly are 0 to 6 percent but range to 25 percent. The soils formed mainly in acid silty old alluvium and minor amounts of loamy alluvium derived largely from shale and micaceous sandstone with some quartzite. Sand and gravel commonly are at a depth of 2.1 to 3.0 meters (7 to 10 feet). Mean annual precipitation ranges from 991 to 117 mm (39 to 46 inches). Mean annual air temperature ranges from 7 to 13 degrees C (45 to 56 degrees F).

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Ginat, Weinbach, and Wheeling soils. Ginat soils are poorly drained and are on nearly level areas or in depressions. Weinbach soils are somewhat poorly drained are on nearly level areas or on gentle slopes. Wheeling soils are well drained and typically are on higher topographic positions or more sloping dissected areas along drainageways.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Moderately well drained. The potential for surface runoff is very low to high. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderately high above the fragipan and moderately low in the fragipan. Permeability is moderate above the fragipan and moderately slow or slow in the fragipan. Flooding is rare in some areas.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of Sciotoville soils are cultivated. Principal crops are corn, soybeans, small grain, and legume-grass hay. Some are used for special crops such as vegetables, and steeper areas are used for pasture or woodland. Native vegetation is hardwood forest.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeastern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, northern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia; MLRAs 115A, 120A, 120B, 120C, 121, 124, 126, and 134. The type location is in MLRA 124. The series is of moderate extent, about 50,000 acres.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Brown County, Ohio, 1931.

REMARKS: Field study and laboratory data identifies the particle-size control section of most pedons as fine-silty. The series has been correlated as a fine-silty taxadjunct of the Sciotoville series in several published soil surveys.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon: from the surface to a depth of 33 cm (Ap1, Ap2 horizons).
Argillic horizon: from a depth of 33 to 150 cm (Bt, Btx horizons).
Fragipan: from a depth of 86 to 150 cm (Btx horizon).
Aquic conditions: iron depletions with chroma of 2 in all horizons below a depth of 56 cm.
